i have 94 thunderbird LX with the 4.6L and when the engine is cold and i step on the gas it goes up to 2 grand and starts popping and banging and after it idles for a few minutes i can wind it up all the way if i barely step on the gas but if i step on it it falls on its face popin and banging and if its sat for a couple days it cranks longer on the first start up i tried to pull the codes and there are none present. So I am wondering if its a throttle position sensor of fuel pressure regulator. everybody i talked to said the engine coolant temp. sensor was so i replaced that and it helped some but it still pops and bangs. i just bought this car 6 monthes ago and i am going nuts from all the problems i havin with it :banghead: any help is apreciated greatly

engine timing possibly? i mean the advance could be off and is why the fast gas knocks it off?

Could it possibly be your cats? Sounds like some of the symptoms to me.

O2 sensor(s)?? That could cause the incorrect mixture.

ok thanks guys ill look into those ideas. could it be a contaminaterd maf sensor because it had a kn and in and the morons i bought it from took it out and replaced with a regular filter then sprayed carb cleaner into the intake hose in attemp clean it. at one time it had lean mixture trouble codes in the computer. any thoughts?

Yes it could be the maf! Mine did similar due to the maf. Though without the popping.

Just wanted to thank everyone, who kicked in their ideas, on this thread. You fixed my Tbird too! Thanks! My car was doing pretty much the same thing, and was also throwing "lean codes", for bank1, and bank2. I took out the MAF, and cleaned it with a soft-bristle tooth brush. It took about five minutes, and my car was running like new again :o). My "next stop", was to replace the catalytics, which I wasn't too thrilled about. Thanks again!

Best regards,
