93 Escort Starts Erratically

My 93 ford escort wagon has been starting erratically. There was no fuel so we figured it was the fuel pump, had it changed and it worked for one day. The next day it wouldn't start again. After having it towed to shop they said when it came in there was no fuel or spark, they couldn't duplicate problem and it was working fine. Again, it worked for a day and then wouldn't start again. Any suggestions?
