tried installing starter and wtf?

ive got a 92 grand am SE with the 2.3L quad ohc

the starter was bad so I changed it out and when I turned the key it was turning over for a second acting like it was going to start chug..chug..chug...chugg.... then vvvvrreeee!!! made a weird whining sound and stopped, smoke pouring out and now it wont make any sounds at all. the smoke was white but didnt smell acrid like wiring, and it came out from where the starter is.

any thoughts?

sounds like the starter needed a shim and was binding in the motor, or the clutch in the starter drive broke. Take the starter back and get a new one.
