Altering Tailights and upgrading to LED

I was wondering if anyone has found a way to remove the cover to the tail light(the part with the black bars) without breaking it. I want to do something close to euro, but I want to design my own cover and the ugly black lines on the 97 - 03 tail light cover are getting in the way. I'm scared im gonna crack something so I thought I'd ask first~

also I'm upgrading all my lights (inside & out) to led versions(no changing sockets just changing the lights) and I wanted to find out if there are any adverse side effects besides the fast blinking of the turn signals (which I dont use anyways)

It is not possible to remove the black lines....but you could remove the red lenses
