Hey all,
Who out there owns a VTEC, and what are the pros and cons?
What years where these made? Are they somewhat rare? I don't see them too often. How good are the motors?
Thanks,
mr.g

Very very rare! Almost impossible to acquire. I have one, doubt if many others out there have one

They aren't so rare, just expensive. Well if your broke like me. They cost like 2-3 grand, but come stock around 200 ponies. They are good motors.

My VTEC engine has only 145hp... :(
And I don't know how much they cost because to get my rare VTEC engine I had to buy the whole car for $20k :)

u guys can be dicks sometimes.... lol..... VTEC is a valve timing and lift control technology of a Honda motor, and since Honda motors are in Acuras, they too can have VTEC. basically in a nutshell it gives you a lil boost in power in the upper RPM range. Most higher model Hondas/Acuras have VTEC.

Ok... my bad... I have the only VTEC on my street :)
To answer questions... not rare at all, very common, standard engine in EX models for Accords which are very common, and Preludes and Integras, etc.. They are fantastic engines and have been around since about 1987ish, I think.

Well standard on SOME EXs anyway. My '93 is non-VTEC.

Honda motors are great, reliable motors for what they are. VTEC revolutionized motor technology and has been copied, to one degree or another, by many other manufacturers. There really are no "cons" to owning a VTEC or i-VTEC car. That is, unless you're one of those American muscle assholes...in which case simply OWNING a VTEC/i-VTEC vehicle, or any import for that matter, is a con.

VTEC stands for Variable valve Timing & Electronic lift Control
It comes stock with certain Honda/Acura models. It cannot be purchased separately. (unless you do a swap (engine transplant) that has VTEC) Some other car manufacturers have another form of VTEC. Toyota has VVT-i and Ford has Z-TEC. The purpose of VTEC is to have good top end power while providing excellent gas mileage. Check out this link for more in depth info

No expression of regrets needed, phoenixitc. The way I drive, the VTEC valves would probably never open anyway (they don't call me AccordCodger for nothing!)

Actually, your comment is both offensive and asinine! I'm old enough to remember and have proudly owned American muscle cars, 68 & 69 Camaro, different late model Firebirds and SS/Z28s. The best cars to own are mid- to late-60s and early 70s muscle cars, the Hemis, big block Chevys, Pontiacs, etc. I plan to build a replica 55 Shoebox with a 502 engine. I also plan on buying a Dodge Magnum when they offer the same Hemi as the 300 will have in 05 that will have 425hp.
I still plan to keep and use my 95 Honda Accord EX with the wonderful VTEC 145hp engine, upgrading and modifying it a little at a time. I see it as having something from both sides of the fence. I see no cons to owning my Accord. It's a good looking, reliable car and modifying it is fun. I enjoy doing the same to "American muscle" cars. There's nothing like the torque and pull of a big block V8.

i give american "muscle" ALOT of respect, and ive only owned imports. 89 Honda CRX Si, 90 Honda Prelude Si, 90 Honda hatch DX, 88 Mazda RX-7 (ROTARY BABY!!!!), 85 Honda CRX Si (lol) and now a 96 Accord EX V6. the mazda stomped all over all kinds of cars, except when i got my ass handed to me after i TRIED to race a Firebird.

I love both the raw power of V8's and the wonderful technology of VTEC. The only Muscle car I've owned was a Grand National. But, can that be considered a muscle car since it was only a boosted V6

Come on now, let's not get stereotypical here, much like the guy above I've owned countless hot-rods with powerplants from 289cobras to 455HO's, my latest is a 80 TransAm with near 600hp (try getting that out of an NA rice burner)
However my point is the same as Mr. Muscle up there, when it comes down to it the only thing that matters is who's looking back at who. I have fun driving my 98 Accord (VTEC :) and surprising the local glowstick racers at the stoplights. Automotive enthusiasm is not a war, it's a race! See you guys at the finish!

Just because your car has a VTEC engine, doesn't mean it will perform like a true VTEC engine. The only cars that use true VTEC to it's full potential are the newer Civic Si, Preludes, S2000s and Accord V6. The rest are just economy cars. They're not for racing.

I'm no expert on VTEC, but the way I understand it, it's just a nifty way of getting more fuel into the cylinders at HIGH revs, without doing at at LOW revs too.
If Honda had decided to build a straight 16 valve Honda motor (no VTEC), then, the way I read it, it would have performed pretty similar to the existing VTEC baby, but slurping gas unneccessarily at lower (<4000 or so) revs.
Now maybe there's a racer (and I don't consider any of the ones scubawrstlr listed "racers") that uses VTEC, but if my understanding is right, I can't imagine why.
VTEC is about combining economy at "normal" driving with high-end performance. Basically "flattening the curve."

okay, I was confused for a moment. How does the h22a hold up performance wise? I have just the stock motor, but it seems petty fast. I couldn't beat a stock stang 6, but i stayed with him the whole way. So should I just stay with the stock? It's not v-tec, i think its an f22a, I can't remember.
