Well the wonderful joint i just put on Sunday was defective so off it came again lastnight. Then I find out the ball joint they gave after argueing with them (autozone) that it was not the right one the shaft was to long and to wide fit but not as it should hav eso needless to say I was not a happy person lastnight. the new balljoint and cv joint are now newly inserted and working fine. In response to the poster who asked why I replaced them so soon wince they were repalced in Jan. THe boot spit open at the seam no other hole sor rips so that one to was defective. I must say I always dael with AUtozone but they are getting very sloppy iwth parts being in the wrong box's lately. Well just hought I'd pat my little adventure into cv joints.

It is strange that the new boot split at the seam since there really is no pressure or strain inside the boot. it basically is just a grease retainer and cover.
But, back to your original question, yes, replacement boots can be used and, no, the assembly doesn't need to come apart to instal them. They are clam shells held together with small screws and clamps once you place them around the axle shaft.
