Ive got the dreaded SES code PO758, the 2-3 shift solenoid. Ive read some posts where people have said it is a easy fix. Just how easy is it? Can you get to them by just dropping the pan or do you also have to drop the lower valve body? Also, is this a dealer only part? While Im replacing the 2-3 solenoid should I go ahead a replace the 1-2 also. Any and all help will be greatly appriated!

It should only be 2-3 solenoids. It has to do with a poorly designed filter clip in between them more than the parts themsleves. It should come as a kit to fix this with a new filter, metal clip, and 2 solenoids. I had a shop do it however, so I can't attest to how easy it is- though it's sounded simple in other posts.

OK, time for a update. Last night the SES light went out and the tranny was running just as it should but this mourning it was back but this time my tranny was stuck in the second gear default. Took it over to Cottmans and they hooked it up to their computer and this time 2 codes where stored in there. PO-758 and PO-753. Seems both my shift solenoids are throwing codes now. What are the chances of both solenoids going out at the same time or could one of the solenoids be causing the other to kick it codes out?

In my case there were assorted pieces of busted off solenoid housing when they took it apart. Maybe something like that is founling the other?
Did the tranny shop have any comments or suggestions? I had that done at Cottman's as well, though for the input speed sensor they seemed far less well informed. In the case of the solenoids they had pulled off the pan and were poking around when a different tech noticed my Aurora and told my guy about the known problems with that filter and such.

Well, I got my car back today. Cottman had it for a week and couldnt figure it out so I took it to the dealer. They had it for over a week and but couldnt decide on wether it was the ECM or the wiring harness inside the tranny. They had to send all their info to a GM service center somewhere and they decided it was the computer after some more trouble shooting. Bottom line is my car runs great now just like before. When they said ECM I think I just about had a heart attack because we all know how much they are supposed to cost but it really wastnt that much. Total bill for all the trouble shooting and ECM and isntallation and programming came to just over $650. Lets hope it a while before I have to take her in again!

Man, I cant win for losing! I get my car home yesterday after they installed the new ECM and it ran great. I start looking through my owners manual and warrenty and notice that the PCM is covered under warrenty for 8 years or 80,000 miles and go back to the dealer to see what they say. They say Im right and that they should have caught that and after talking to someone at GM for about 30 min Im told that I will be receiving a check from GM for the total cost that I payed. GREAT!!! Boy am I happy! I go out to my car with my faith restored in GM and guess what, that damn SES light is on again and my car is stuck in 2nd gear agian! I will never buy American again! Im tired of it. My Pontiac Bonniville before this Aurora was nothing but trouble, I put more money into it then I payed for it over the 5 years I owned it.I should have ponied up the extra $3000 and got the 98 Nissan Maxima instead of the Aurora, but noooooo, I was going to be a good little Union member and buy American. Never again! There is a reason the big 3 have dropped to, if I remember corectly, a 57% ,market share for all auto sold in the US.

Heh, your profile says you are a union iron worker. Your problem is you bought the aluminum wonder :) You need like an early 70s muscle car. None of that offensive plastic and aluminum there...
Heck, that Nissan was probably made from good ol' American scrap iron we sold to them anyway.
I really do love my Aurora, but I'd have to say aside from the input speed sensor taking a long time to fail consistently, at least all my problems have been pretty easy to identify and fix, though too expensive IMO.

Well, I picked my car up this mourning and so far so good. Seems like there was a pink wire somewhere that was completly broken in two. The factory GM guy told my dealer that he has run into this a couple times with Cadilacs but this is the first time with the Aurora. Also said I would still be getting my refund for the ECM so the total bill for three weeks of trouble shooting is $0. Atleast Ive got that to feel good about!
