Hi,
iīm from germany, and need help from you.
my 89 camaro (305 ci tbi/5 speed) runs very bad.
the car has killed one ecm and two proms.
The original ecm and prom were killed for two weeks whitout a sign before.
Then the dealer sad to me, that the ecm and the prom are fault.
So i ordered a new ecm and a new very expensive hypertec stage 2 prom.
The dealer installed the new parts and then the car works normally.
After 2 kilometers the car runs bad again.
I take the car back and the dealer says, that the ecm are ok, but the prom is fault.
The problem is now, that my us-dealer donīt know where the problem is.
All engine parts and all other elektrik/elektronik parts are all checkt and work normaly.
Now the dealer says, order a new prom and than we look where the problem is caused!?!?!(after the third prom is killed, or what??!?!?!!oh iīm so angry!!!!!
So i need help!!!!!!please!
Thankīs a lot

maybe you just need to disconnect the positive battery terminal and let it set for 10 minutes and re-connect it. that way it resets the trouble codes in the computer and usually after installing computers and ecms
if you dont do that the computer still thinks there is a problem. give it a try maybe it will work for you

Could you be a little more specific about the problem your having?? what is the car doing?
is your engine light coming on? Your dealer just could be tryin' ta soak some money out of you for a simple fix..

never heard of an ecm and 2 proms just going bad like that. couple things to check are the voltage regulator in the alternator, check the voltage at the battery while it's running, it should be no more than 14-16 volts, overcharging can destroy an ecm. be carefull when handling an ecm and a prom chip, static electricity can destroy both. there might be an intermitant short to ground from the fused power source to the ecm too. connecting the battery cables backwards is something to be careful of too.
the only other thing i can think of is that maybe your problem isnt computer related and the dealer knows you have an expensive hypertech prom that he's trying to screw you out of

@ damone
The starting procedure itself sounds totally normal (engine starts instantly), but then the engine shakes for 1 second and dies. Playing with the gas pedal you can hold the engine alive but its spitting and shaking (sounds like there is insufficient fuel supply, but we have checked the fuel pressure in the line and itīs ok!) We also checked all mechanical and electrical components and we couldnīt find any irregularity!!!.
the dealer said to me that he made a readout of the trouble codes and could not find a thing. But when he does the readout with running engine (playing with the gas pedal...) he gets every code that is existing (but "check engine" light is off!)....donīt know exactly if this can be true...
one thing to mention: the dealer installed an autometer rev tach some weeks before the whole trouble has begun (I was driving around 800 mls since then) ...could there be a interaction?
Thank you for your help! Here in germany its pretty hard to keep your camaro in good shape...and unfortunately the few dealers here seem to be pretty incompetent...

Make sure they check your diodes in the alternator, as well as any going to the ecm. They are there to prevent any current flowing back to the computer and possibly frying it. Have they put anything onto an osciliscope? There are so many times that a car may be running fine with no codes, but the sensor is on it's way out. The osciliscope is the only way you would know because nothing else picks up breaks in a wwave pattern. Make sure they do check wiring with that tach as well.

Id have to agree with 4onfloor, it sounds like the dealerships trying to rip you off.in 1999 GM had recieved almost 2000 ecm's that were sent back to them for warrenty work.out of the 2000 ecm's only 2 were found faulty. Incompetant techs that cant find the problem in a vehicle always try to blame the ecm because they dont understand it. Avoid going back to that dealership if possible and find a good diagnostician to look at your car

electrical harness rubthrough is the first thing that jumps into my head. the diodes are a good thing to check, but given the nature of the beast, that it works for a little while, then you drive it and they fry, it sounds like you have an inttermittant ground out on your wiring harness that under certain conditions grounds out and fries the computer. but ill warn you, electical ground outs like that are hell to find, they always happen to be in the most unlikly spots, and can take either five minutes or five weeks to find. hope that helps.
