I just got my new car...1996 mitsubushi 3000GT. However, I want the transmission to be automatic not manual. The deal was so good I couldn't pass it up, so I just decided I could replace the transmission...is this hard to do?? whats the cost? Thanks

No, it will not be easy. Nor cheap.

However, it is a very attainable project. Research it a bit more, before you begin. And good luck, you will be proud of accomplishing this.

You might consider buying a second parts car, that is auto, to insure
you get all the needed parts, like brackets, lines, pumps, oil coolers, electrical switches, etc. Then sell it when you finish. (Having a visual reference would be invaluable to insure you do this correctly.)

Hey Mitsubishi experts, are there any words of wisdom? Any electrical tie-ins from the trans to the rest of this car that would make this more challenging?

Jeez, are you nuts?
All of the 300gts that I've EVER found for sale were Autos!
I'd say just suck it up and learn stick. But that's just me.

A standard 3000GT is a rare sporty jewel. An automatic will turn it into grandma's car.
A conversion will be at least $2500 and would require a professional mechanic to do.
Your car is likely more valuable with the standard, due to their rarity.

I see these cars a lot on the road, however I didn't realize how rare a manual is.

From a car guy's perspective then, seriously consider the following idea.

1. Sell your existing car for closer to market value. (make a profit on it, since you got it for such a good deal).

2. Buy an Automatic version, if this is what you want.

Maybe you will drive the car for a while, and realize how much more fun it is to drive a manual, and keep it instead. Maybe you need to commute in heavy traffic every day, and need an automatic instead. Neither issue is wrong or better than the other.

If you try to convert the car, remember it will be out of service for a while. Is this a factor?

Me, I enjoy working on projects, and this would still be something I would consider doing, (not considering the rarity or the sacrilidge in removing the 5 speed), but then I have more than 1 car.

Anyway, best of luck.

If your going to replace the tranny the first question I would ask myself is whether I have the proper tools to do so. A tranny weights a lot, and it is a bit akward in distribution. The safest bet would be taking it to a shop. It will cost, but IMO its better this way if your experience isn't adequate. If you know people that are experienced and willing to help it would dramatically aid in this conversion. As Rufe pointed out, a parts car would be a good idea if its financially possible.

From what I know the 3.0 motors do have a nitch for oil burning due to a good friend of mines personal experience who owned an early 90s 3000GT (he is moderatly experienced with them and sold it before anything major happened that was likely to pop up). I'll talk to him and see if he has any input that would aid in your swap. Also, a check up at a garage may be a good start in determining whether their are any pre-existing problems. Go to some 3000 forums and see if they have any feedback.

Do some research on this before you jump to any conclusions. If you do decided to pursue it, then by all means good luck.
