I have a 2001 Taurus and both the drivers and passenger windows make a creaking noise when they get all the way to the top. It kinda sounds like the motors are trying to push them too far. Is this a concern?

If you're talking about a Gear grinding sound(Like rolling a pencil on a table)... then My 03 does it too... Local dealer said its normal, something with the way they're designed.

Now if you're talking about like a creaking door hinge, then that's something I haven't heard before, so I'd say its not normal.

A soft "crunch" sound as the window tops up is present in most Taurus'. There is a lube that can be done to it but the dealer wants a hefty price to do them. Was a short service bulletin published in a Popular Mechanics mag a few months ago specifying that Ford has a lube recommended for it. The service writer at Ford who I spoke with told me that they didn't consider the problem worth fixing. (they might if your car is out of warranty)

It does sound a little like rolling a pencil on the table. But it really doesn't sound like a gear noise. It comes from the top of the door frame, as if the force of the glass is trying to push too far, like it is cramming the seal or trying to bend metal. It is hard to put in to words.

My 01' SES does exactly the same thing. I never really gave it much thought. It does sound like the window is trying to push to far, but I always just let off the button as soon as the window reaches the top. Seems like if you were to hold it to long it would be hard on the window motors and cranking mechanism. That is, over time it might cause them to wear out prematurely. Glad to hear my car is not the only one with this condition.

Yeah, me too. I guess if it were pushing overly hard the thermistor or whatever limit protection it has would trip. Have you noticed any change since you had the car, has it worsened?

I've only had the car for about 2 months. It's done it since the 1st day I took delivery and hasn't changed over time.

My 2001 Taurus Wagon does the same thing. I think it is just the glass seating against the rubber seal at the top of the window. :iceslolan

Go to your local parts supplier and ask for a can of silicone spray lubricant. Spray this in the window tracks at the front and rear of the windows and the top portion of the window seating area. The window should be down when doing this. The noise that you all hear is the window resting in its closed position in the track. If you have good Technician doing your oil change they will lubricate these areas as well as the weather stripping on the door it's self. :sunglasse

My '02 SEL does the same thing. Just on nthe front windows. Sounds like it is trying to push the window through the rubber gasket. I, too, just try to be careful to let off the up button a tad early.

My 94 taurus makes the same noise with my front windows, unfortunately neither of my back windows work anymore. I'm pretty sure the motors went bad.

The motors may be salvageable. My 97 has had problems with both rears caused by lack of use. I now use them when I fill up with gas and it seems to keep them working OK.

I removed the units from the doors and opened them up. I cleaned the copper commutators with emery cloth (very gently!). After putting them back together I plugged them in and they worked fine. Some may be reluctant to use emery cloth so I would try just spinning the rotor so the brushes an copper are rubbing off any oxide that may be on the surface. That might work too. Even a newspaper may be enough.
