Having Problem with starter, overheated?

My 2001 Durango will not start. The battery is fine, but i believe the problem is with the start because when i turn the key it makes a ticking noise. Is it possible to overheat the starter? How do i jump start it? Where is the starter so I can use a screwdriver to connect the fuses on it? Thanks for your help.

Does anyone please have any help??? Should i just take it in to the mechanic and be charged an exorbiant amount of money?

The battery might be all fine and good but is it connected properly? Maybe the posts are dirty and it isn't making a good connection.

You can overheat and wreck a starter if you crank for too long, like 30 seconds or something I don't know because I've never burnt one out.

The starter is on the driver's side on the back of the block. I think the solenoid might be mounted on the starter, you might end up just replacing that, but you'll probably end up replacing the whole starter if that's what it is. You should really check all connections first and be sure. You don't want to spend money on a new starter when it isn't the problem.

You should get someone to tap on the starter with like a hammer and a punch while you attempt to start it. That can work sometimes. Good luck.

Ticking noise could be a bad starter or a weak battery. Like bleed said it could be that the posts are dirty. Just because you thnk the battery is good, there are other variables. Bad Alternator? Short draining the system? If you want to have it diagnosed you should have the whole charging system checked. If you jump start it red to red black on other veichle to any clean metal on your Durango and you get it to start, odds are that its not the starter. Jumping the terminals will probably just result in more ticking. In short, there are many components that could be causing your problem and if you dont want to haphazardly change things you should have the whole system checked.
