Inaccurate Fuel Indicator

I'm the guy with the '96 Jetta Speedo problem that lasted for over six months before the Service Department finally replaced the instrument cluster. :smokin:

Before that and since then, the fuel indicator has been "off". My normal experience is that the indicator moves at the rate that the gas level drops in the tank. Now, it reads less than 3/4 of a tank when I've only used 2 gallons. My wife and daughter are scared to drive the thing - fearing that it'll run out of gas on some lonely stretch of highway. :uhoh:

Assuming that the instrument cluster is not the culprit, what other sensor or part could be the root cause? :banghead:

The importat question is does it read accurate when the tank is low?

My 88 Jetta does the same thing. Pay attention to your mileage. When my tanks full its shows only 3/4 full and will work accordingly. I monitor this by fuel mileage/trip meter. I've never ran out of gas due to this problem. Hope this helps.
