Hi.
I am looking at swopping my D16A9 engine for a Civic Type R engine, can anyone tell me what would be required to make this possible? What modifications will i have to make, anything major?
Many Thanks
Jordan

if i sense a hint of sarcasm, maybe you should do a little internet searching. I am normally 100% against the "search" re:post, but this is truly the #1 most asked question in the history of modifying hondas. you will find everything you need to know by simply typing in "B series swap" into any search engine.

I did try a search mate, which was why i asked. Thanks for the tip any way.

Ok that motor is not worth it! If anything i'd just spend an extra 200-300 to get the Integra type r motor. 1.6 just sucks for me. Trust me you'll be happy with the ITR motor. I had a full b16a swap but then i got the oppurtunity to get the ITR short block with CTR pistons in it.Just slapped on my tranny and b16a head on it! It made a huge difference! It nearly shaved off a second of my 1/4 mile time! Of course it was much cheaper than buying the whole type r swap....that set up i just did was called a "poor mans type r" :)

remember guys he is from the UK so the mounting places will be different,
you will need the engine/loom/gearbox/mounts/ecu/hubs/front knuckles, and over in the UK the engine is not cheap as in 2-3k so i hear!
unless you have about 3.5 -4k lying about dont even think your guna get near for a proper swap, just by the CRX VT and do a swap , its HALF the work !

I'd suggest to do the poor mans type r. Saves you alot of money. Look for a first gen b16a complete head, cable trans , and complete gsr/itr shortblock. Or you can get a bare block and put some aftermarket rods and pistons in it?

but he will still need all the front running gear etc wont he as his current engine is a D series, you can get the CRX VT here for as low as £800 ($1600) complete

Well he can do that i guess. I dont know much about them EDM cars but i assumed that he would need to do the same as what we do here in U.S. ?

yeha sorry hahaha
well IMO mate i would get a cheap CRX VT with a good body and do the swap if u REALLY want one, have you driven a CRX VT yet or no ??? you may want just a B16 to play with or turbo

You know what. What you just suggested to him is a really good idea. He can just get a complete ITR /GSR short block for around 400-1500 and just use his b16 parts. Then you got yourself a 1.8 :)

No i havent driven a CRX VT, whats the difference from the Crx i have? I have tried finding some info on this this morning, but couldnt find a thing!
The D16A9 i have in at the moment, would i not be better off tuning this engine, maybe adding a turbo, than spending proper wonga on a new engine and all the mods required to fit it?
Cheers again.

yes you can do very eaisly however it wont be a cheap change , the VT is 30 BHP up on the 16v to start with so straight away you are up on power however the VT is heavier , the VT is a LOT more tuneable though compared to the D16A9
i have had both engines and prefer the VT lump and parts are easily available !

Might sound daft, but how would i go about trying to find a VT engine here in the UK? Usual scrapyards?
How much do you think the VT engine and the fitting will cost me? Is the VT just a bolt in engine or do i need new mounts etc??

its not worth changing the engine to a B16 IMO just buy a VT it will cost more than a VT in the first place if u do an engine swap
jordanfranklin
09-10-2004, 05:30 AM
Ok mate, so how much am i looking at for the VT swap, and how much is it roughly going to cost from your experiences with your change?
Civic Jim
09-10-2004, 05:32 AM
i didnt do a swap i just bought a CIVIC VT straight out, i had a 1.3 but couldnt be assed with the swap as its just a waste o money, i bought my 57k civic with FSH for 1600

Right think i got a little confused here, i thought you meant the VT was a different engine??
Its too early in the morning mate! So what you are sayin is that you bought a civic VT? Did you swap this in to a rex? I really prefer the look of the rex over the civic.
So if i was to have my exhisting D16A9 tuned, what sort off HP increase can i expect?
Sorry if all of this is a little jumbled, but as i say im a little confused as to what you meant, and this is my first Honda, so i dont know much!

ok the CRX and Civic VT have the Vtec engine (B16A1)
the Civic/CRX 16v (yours) have the D16A9 in it
my civic VT has the B16 which is 150-160 BHP , i bought it with the VTEC engine already in (standard)
you can tune up your engine but they arent that cheap to tune unless you go turbo but even then its not that cheap

Riigghht, with you know mate.
So im best off trying to find an old civic with the V-Tec engine and swap it in?
Ok, so what will need to be done, will i need a new transmission, engine mounts etc, or will it swap straight in?

NO, your better off selling yours and buying a VT !!!
its not worth messing about with yours, if you want a VTEC then just buy a VT dont bother with yours,
otherwise you can turbo yours

So your sayin sell mine and buy a VTEC rex?
Christ i wish i had looked in to this a little more.
Thing is, i have just had over £600 in sound equipment put in, and that is not including the new head unit.
Guess it will all be coming out then. Cheers for the help, guess that was hard work mate!

well mate if you buy a VT you get leather seats, aircon (sometimes), powersteering, VTEC B16A1 (150-160 BHP) bigger brakes, and higher spec, i would take out all your stereo and buy a VT if you REALLY want to get a VTEC one if you like yours enough then just turbo it
