99 Contour 4cyl

I have a 99 contour that has been great until now. 65,000 miles. While driving down the fwy, it started sputtering, then ran ok for a while sputtered somemore , then ok etc. Finally it came to a stop. After about two minutes it started and ran fine. I took it to my mechanic who said it showed a transmission code and referred me to trans place. I went to the dealer who said $2700. for a new tranny. I took it to a well established Tranny place, they said the tranny is fine. The car ran fine for about a week then started sputtering again. No one can tell me what the problem is? Any Suggestions???

ATX or MTX? and it sound's more like a O2 sensor to me.

change your fuel filter if yo uhave not. and if it still does the ame thing have the fule presser checked on the fuel rail. best of luck. p.s. i have sceen theses 4 bangers run on verry low feul presher from a falty pump it usaly starts witha radom cheack engin light
