Help with squealing brakes on 98

Have had a 98 Monty for a few months. Brakes have always sqealed when stopping in reverse. Took it to two diff. brakes shops. They both told me that this was normal, for this model year, because of the design of the brakes. Any truth to this? Thanks for your help

Its possible. You can take the sensor off and the squealing will stop, but you wont have a warning when the pads run down.

Do you have the 4 wheel disc, or disc drum?? if you have 4 wheel disc, you probably have a cheap set of pads that have uneven sized metallic particles in them that cause squeaks. Replace the rear pads with a quality set, like Bendix. If you have disc/drum, I would get a can of brake parts cleaner, and clean off the dust from the shoes and inside of the drum. Dust settles on the edge of the shoe against normal rotation, and when you reverse, the dust gets between the shoe and drum and will squeal.

I've had my 98 monty for over 2 years and I've put all new brakes on twice trying to get rid of the squealing, nothing works. I've been told the same thing about it being normal for my car. I've never had any trouble when stopping so I wouldn't worry to much about it.

Same here. Brakes are great. Nothing wrong with them. Tried the cleaning bit, twice.

Oh. The 440 in the pic is in my 73 Charger. Not my Monty. LOL

Thanks. I'll look into them when I need brakes again. The rears are the only ones that squeak, in reverse.

The rear pads are smaller. What I did in the back, is I got the brake quiet kits. Its a shim that moves the pad closer to the rotor so it dosent vibrate but it also wont wear out sooner. The vibrating is the squeak in reverse. But I wouldent wory if its only in reverse..

Forgot to mention that the rears are drums. And, both shops cleaned them.

Best thing for you then, get new shoes, drums and a spring kit.. replace it all..
rotors and drums are so cheap now, it dosent pay to cut them anymore.
Probably cost ya under 100.00 for the whole deal. Ceramic shoes will do just fine on new drums. There is nothing about a monte that makes it special enough to have squeaky brakes...
