91 Auto Trans Question

I am trying to locate which of the two solenoids on the automatic transmission is the one for gears 3 and 4. The solenoid high up on the transmission or the one that is located low and on the side?

if you go to transtar industries web site you can download exploded views and listing of parts for any transmission.if you cant get it let me know and will see if I can find it.you will need to know engine size and transmission ID,ie AOD,4R55E etc.

Your transmission is an A4LD. With the pan removed, the electrical solenoid closest to the engine is TC lockup, the next solenoid is the 3/4 shift. The valve body must be dropped to remove them.

On the side the OD servo is closest to the engine, next is intermediate servo (2nd). Closer to the pan and sticking out is the vacuum modulator.

My mistake...this explore is a 92. The GF picked it up used from a family. The owner said that one day the 3/4 fuse blew and continued to blow replacements. I reckoned that the culprit could be the 3/4 solenoid. I picked up a replacement kit (valve body and solenoid and connectors) at NAPA but couldn't figure out which solenoid was the 3/4 culprit. The two look identical....maybe if I clean them off they will be different. but, a solenoid is a solenoid - right?

So, the one that is farthest from the engine is the 3/4OD solenoid. If memory serves me, that would also be the lower of the two (above the pan). I think the upper one was closer to the engine.

I hope this is the fix...

I am going to try to send you a copy of exploded view that I have from Transtar. I got one from Ford yesterday and it just the opposite on valve postions. I trust the transtar picture.I tried to show the Ford parts guy the difference I came up with but the did not give a r_ _ _ _

Before you drop the pan. Take the electrical connector off the tranny then plug it into your new solenoid set. If it don't blow the fuse, then pull pan. Sometimes also, its just the wires within the pan. Then you don't have to drop the valvebody. just repair the wires. Transmission solenoids rarely pull enough amps to blow fuses but...anything can happen:)
