On the left side of the transmission is the vacuum servo that pulls the clutch arm for shifting. The arm is adjustable, often it will not pull far enough to keep from grinding into reverse (as it's unsynchronized) but pulls far enough for the forward gears (as they are synchronized). Somewhere around here I have an old Bentley manual showing the exact adjustment specification if you need it. You should also check the vacuum diaphram for leaks as that is a common failure point. The car does not have the guide tube for the clutch cable tube welded into the center frame tube so it's difficult. You would need a pedal assembly, cable, bowden tube, clutch & flywheel & the transmission. If you don't want to cut open the center frame tube to put in the cable guide tube you would at least have to cut a place for a guide tube under the rear seat for the cable to go through & the bowden tube to attach to. If the auto trans physicxally goes into gear but doesn't move, it is probably the clutch inside the trans. The parts are available & it's not that much more difficult to do than a standard trans, you can do it with the trans still in the car. Only the bell housing section has to be removed.

Does something seem to be holding the shifter, physicallly not letting it go into any gear? Even with the engine off? That sounds like a vacuum servo problem. If you want to convert you should probably look at a manual beetle to get the exact position & neccessary clutch cable tube size. Take the rear seat out, remove the shifter linkage access plate & when looking down from above the hole goes left (of car) of center, beside & slightly higher than the hole for the linkage.

if turn of car i can go into any gear but if it is runnin the reverse gear grinds while all other gear dont make a sound but it doesnt allow me to engage so it only stays in neutral. This weekend i will go to the junkyard to remove parts
