4x4 question

This is my first experience with a 4x4 vehicle. This may sound like a stupid question but how the hell do I shift into 4h or 4l? I have a 97 chevy 1500 z71 with a automatic trans. The 4x4 feature is manual.

Should be able to shift on the fly to 4HI. To get 4 Lo you should be in neutral and moving less than 5 mph

if you mean the lever is on the floor, just pull it from sh into 4h. to goto 4l youhave to pass thru neutral, the easiest and best way is stop, shift the tranny into N, then the xfer case. DO NOT be moving unless you are fond of xfer cases full of shiny metal filings
