Defroster/fan Failure

I hope someone can help. I have a '00 Mailbu. My defrosters won't work. It seems like the switch isn't moving from face (i've moving to floor and still get it in my face). The last time I brought it into the shop it cost me $100 for them to fix the washer. Can someone please tell me how to remove the control knob so that I can do this myself.

Thanks for any help.

I think the controls are vacume actuated. Check all your fuses and relays. servicing the HVAC unit is a bit more involved than removing the knobs. Go by a Chiltons or Hynes manual.

check for a loose or broken vacuum hose under the hood that supplies vacuum to the HVAC system. the factory hoses are plastic and prone to cracking. They normally run off the throttle body, or the back of the intake manifold.

My friend's Grand Am did the same thing. All it turned out to be was the knob was broken. It wasn't turning the stem that comes out of the A/C control panel to change the vents. The plastic can get brittle from heat and it is a common thing.

It is possible that the selector switch is dirty. See the new how-to on the A/C Flicker problem. This mod seemed to fix the selector hesitation mine had.

Has nothing to do with the flicker...that's a whole different problem. Most likely a vacuum prob or vacuum motor problem....It isn't worth my effort to get to the HVAC system

I was only saying that cleaning the Selector fixed the hesitation described that I was experiencing. It is possible that I also fixed a slight vacuum leak when I was reinstalling and snugging everything up. Either way, the selector could probably use a cleaning, and all of the hoses are right there to check for a leak.
