Chain

Hey everyone, I need your input again :eek7: ....I have a 1999 Honda CBR 600 F4 and it makes alot of chain noise. Ive used chain wax which seems to work really good but do you know of anything better that will quite the noise of the chain...or is there a better chain out there? I was thinking of picking up an x-chain vs my c-chain....do you think that would help much???? Thank you for your :2cents: !

to try answer the original question: is your chain adjusted correctly and have you lubed the chain while its hot and then let it soak in. i know of X-ring chains and O-ring but not heard of C-chains

Thanks Aussie, and yes...the x-ring and o-ring, that's what I meant to say...and the c-chain (I dont know what that is either, I meant to say O-ring...woops brain fart!) :) I guess Im not complaining about the noise...but with most chain driven bikes I usually hear alot of chain noise and I was just wondering if there was a way to quiet it. I am going to tighten the chain, and oil it again. It seems to be getting better though. Thanks again.

I just got my bike bike from its first service and its making a noise that it didn't use to make. I was told it mike be chain noise. As soon as I open the throttle I hear the noise. As soon as I close the throttle, at any speed, it immediately goes away. the best way I can describe the noise is a very very very fast "rattle"?? Maybe a fast vibrating sound, but not really?? Does anyone think this is chain noise?

Bula, since it seems to be related to throttle response, I doubt it's chain noise... unless there is something funny about how the chain reacts under force vs. cruising. Is the rattle like a tapping maybe? Is it at all RPMs or just certain ones?

MX: looks like you've done pretty much everything you can. Personally, I don't hear chain noise specifically, so I am having a hard time thinking of "solutions".

hey, thanks for the help. After a ride today I can narrow down the noise to the front of the bike. It is all rpms at all gears except 1st. It isn't a tapping noise, well maybe. I've tried to listen and another way I can describe it is as a very very fast click or knock, where the clicks get closer and more continuous type noise as I go higher in RPMs. Any thoughts would be great. you may be hearing timing chain noise which can be loud compared to belt noise. i found this when riding my friends old honda cbr250rr

The only time I had a problem w/chain noise is when riding next to a concrete barrier on the highway. The raspy noise would ricochet back and seem to amplified.
Do you hear the noise while revving the engine in neutral, or is it only under power?

it's only under power, but as I have been trying to figure it out, it seems to be coming from the front of the bike. Any thoughts?

Ok, I have another question about chains. How do you tell when it needs to be replaced, and should it be replaced after _ miles? (Other than it being the the replace area of the tensioner area.) But I've heard that if the chain gets a redish tint on it, it needs to be replaced. Is this true, and what is that tint?

If I had to guess, the people mean rust in terms of "reddish tint". Your chain should NEVER be dry enough to rust... ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS use chain wax or lube of some sort AFTER CLEANING IT.

As for replacement, I've never had a bike long enough to worry about it, so beats me.

i would replace a chain when there is no longer any room for tightening or when the sprockets are worn and they are being replaced. as tangie said keep it lubed and you'll be relatively trouble free
