ok, ive been having a strange noise coming from my tranny, almost like a rattle or grind and after about a week i realized it was the tranny, so i checked the fluid and it took 2 quarts to top it off, so i had been driving with a low fuid level for god knows how long. After adding the 2 quarts of castrol atf the noise stopped completely, BUT my question is could i have done any serious damage to my trans??

ps-- after filling and driving a little i checked the dipstick and the fluid looked(and smelled) good and there did not appear to be any metal flakes on the stick.

pls help, i want to make sure that i dont do any more damage by driving (if it did damage at all).

Most automatic transmissions will stop working prior to doing any damage when the fluid is low. Since they use the fluid to channel power between the clutches and keep the transmission cool. If the transmission is working ok now, I wouldn't believe that you did any damage. There is no absolute way to insure you didn't damage the transmission but if it works ok now keep driving on driving. If you are really worried, change the filter and refill the transmission, this will help to remove any sediment in the pan and you should be able to detect if there are any shavings from the clutches. Good Luck!
