Engine Damage?

I have a 99 base 3.8L 6-shooter auto. Max power is made at 5250 rpms, but under full throttle it shifts at 5900. Naturally wanting to get the most out of my 4 gears, seems to me it would be best to go to 5900. (shifts harder there too) But being in my financial state i can't afford to damage my engine in any way, much less blow it. The visible red line starts at 5250; my car has 52k miles and runs strong. My question is should i stay on the gas or should i take my foot off and wait for it to shift and loose time and speed?
