awd was disabled, problems arising

I bought a '92 safari awd at 75k with the awd disabled. How it was done I'm not sure. All the parts are in place and connected. Now at 100k and I'm getting a noise similar to worn out brake pads when turning ANY amount to the right. Turning to left the noise stops. All front end parts have checked out as have the brakes. It's been suggested by repair shop problem is in front differential. This being my only means of work ect. I'm looking for info on what may be the problem/solution , or should I ignore the noise and drive on or cut my losses now
any help would be great
