Interchangeable (cheaper) parts?

Recently had to order a wheel bearing for our 98 GC Sport.
FYI the rear wheel bearing price was quoted by one local Dodge dealer as $202 and another as $378(!) (Van has 16" rims).

We were forced to dealers because all local parts markets (Autozone, NAPA, etc.) had the part listed as "dealer only" and have no available part listed for a 98 GC

That said, a savvy employee at one parts store figured out that a $98 bearing listed for a '97 Pontiac Voyager was interchangeable and ... it was!!!

I could have spent $200-$400 just for the PART for the "Grand Caravan" without the knowledge that this, (and certainly more) parts are virtually interchangeable (for example '96-2000') and that Plymouth parts will work as well.

We saved at least $100 if not more.

I suggest that if you are purchasing parts and have the time/resources that you shop out if any more affordable alternate year/model parts are interchangeable.

Good luck (and hoping none of us need to purchase many parts!)
