2000 Intrepid starting problems?

My nephew has an 00 intrepid that has had a starting issue. I gave him my opinion ,but I wanted to see if I could get some more input. Sometimes it starts fine, sometimes he has to hold the key in the start position and it will eventually start,as long as he holds the key in that position. When I had him start it for me, I could hear the solenoid clicking,so I told him to replace the starter. Actually I told him to have someone check all the connections first. I switched the starter relay with another and it had the same result. It just sounds to me like a solenoid problem. Anyone else experience this? Thanks, Tom

If all else fails, try replacing the battery cable that goes directly to the starter. If it's frayed, cracked, or distorted, replace it; even if you're in doubt, replace it.

Your problem is the ignition switch. I had mine replaced in my 00 intepid and it is working fine now.

I also have a 2000 Intrepid and I've only experienced this problem once, yet. The other day when I tried to start my dash lights came on and my cd receiver was working but the starter wasn't kicking in. My battery light wasn't on. There was a electronic whir that stayed at the same pitch until it just stopped after a few seconds (not like a decaying pitch as if something were dying). I think that might have been my cd receiver. There was no click sounding like the starter was kicking in. I decided to open the hood and check it out. I looked inside and just tried to start the car and see what I heard under the hood. What do you know...when I turned the key the car started, no problem. So, I'm thinking the starter is going because I've had this same problem before on another car. But I was wonder what you guys thought. Could it be the ignition switch, etc?

I switched relays in my nephews car ,and he says he hasn't had a problem since. This was Sept.04. I think I switched the wiper relay with the starter relay. They are the same type. This may just have been a coincidence, but it worked...so far. I thought the same thing ,with the starter or solenoid, because I could hear it click then it started. May not have been getting enough voltage through the relay...not positive.
