I hear people suggest using a 180 degree thermostat.. What is the difference between this and the stock one in my s10 already?

stock is 195

Some people use a 180 for a cooling running engine. Don't go any lower though.

Only use a 180 if you don't see snow in the winters though.

You need the extra heat when things get cool.

haha ya i see snow in the winter.. lots of it to and really cold temps...

so what does changed the themostat from 195 to 180 actually do?

runs cooler so you get less detonation and pinging and kncock retard when it is hot out.

Again, not recommended for colder climates.

ive run a 180 degree thermostat in my 95 S-10 (CPI) since 1995. it currently has 179,000 miles on it, and i've not had any ill effects.

we have snow in the winter, it still warms up just fine. in fact the temp gauge hits the same temp in the dead of winter as it does when its 80 degrees outside.

i attribute the outstanding reliability ive had with this truck to cooler stat.

How is your mileage in the winter?

How is your mileage in the winter?

ive honestly not checked it, but ive never seen a noticable difference. i usually get about 350 miles a tank. could be better if id keep the gas pedal off the floor.

where people usually run into problems is with 160 degree stats, which do cause a rich condition because the computer still sees the engine as cold.

Sounds like Sudbury where I live now.

-38c here last winter.

Definitely keep the 195 in there for you.

checked the gas mileage on the last tank, 19.2 mpg with both city and highway driving. motor has 179,385 miles on it. 180 degree t-stat, and original CPI injector.

Where do you live?

It's great that you have great luck!

Hate to say it, but you are on borrowed time with the CPI injector though. I would replace it, you would get even better economy.
