Front Speaker install in 99 Civic

Just bought new speakers to replace the stock speakers in my 99 Civic. Got Logic Soundlabs 6x9s for rear and 6.5"s for front doors. The 6x9s fit fine but the 6.5s for the front don't fit. I compared them to the stock speakers and they are actually bigger. Every website I've been to tells me a 99 Civic has 6.5s in the front doors but when I measured them they were actually 6 1/4"s from end to end (including the metal support). The screw holes obivously don't line up. I can cut out some plastic to make them fit and drill some new holes but there will be gaps between the speaker and the plastic housing in some areas. Plus if I do this, there is no space for the stock or new grills. I don't understand how so many websites can say that a 99 civic takes 6.5s. Am I missing something? Has anyone else had this problem with their Civic? What can I do now?????? Please Help!!!!

I installed some Pioneer 6.5's and they took a creativity because the magnets are bigger. I cut out some of the plastic, and just screwed it in really tight so the mesh cover could snap in over it.

If the actual holes on yours are too far apart, I really don't know what to tell you other than take them back to the store and get some 6 1/4's.

Thanks for the info Ricochet. Your telling me your 6.5s fit in the stock screw holes? Do you recall if your stock speakers were 6.5 or 6 1/4 in diameter? I have not seen any 6 1/4s on the market. I really gonna have to get creative here.

You got the correct size, just the magnet on any aftermarket speaker will be larger than the magnets on the stock ones, so they will seem like they don't fit, but they will. You just have to cut some of that plastic cup the speakers go into, out for them to fit. That's what I had to do with my "6.5 Infinity speakers. Byt they will fit, trust me I have an '00 Civic which is the exact same as the '99 model.

The magnet is not my only prob. Like you said I can just cut some of the plastic but the speaker will not fit flush all around. There will be some space between the speaker and the plastic in some areas. Wont this make them sound crappy? And I still can't fit the stock or new grill.

I'm almost wondering if you ended up with some "6¾ size speakers on accident (maybe packaged in the wrong box), since they DO make that size for some cars like Saturns. Because any "6.5 you stick on there should fit flush around the edge.

Nope, I measured them and they are exactly 6.500000 inches in diameter. Maybe I have a mutant civic

I had to do the same thing for my 97 civic, i have 6.5 pioneers

Sorry kinda off topic but I have a 95 si and plan on running 6.5s in the front stock location. Will it fit easy or do I have to do some shaving and modding?

They should fit. I say it like that because the listed size for them is "5¼ but we put "6½ ones in the doors of my sister's '95 DX coupe. So it'll be the same for yours.

Ok, I will stop being stubburn and actually try it before I decide it will not work by just eye balling it. What tool did you use to cut out the plastic and what part did you cut out. Was it the top part or bottom or all around? I'm thinking of getting a rotary grinding bit and just shaving off some plastic in the areas where it hits. Will update when done. Thanks again fellas.

Dremal tools cure all! :cool: That's what I used on the speaker cups in the doors of my '00 coupe to make my Infinity speakers fit.

Ok, I finally got them to fit, but it wasn't easy. It wasn't just shaving off a little plastic where it hits. I had to use a key hole saw to cut about 80% of the plastic. And now I'm left with very little surface to screw it down. Guess the magnet on the speakers I bought were way bigger than average. I got some Logic Soundlabs. Anyway I haven't connected them yet but when I do I will post the results. Kinda worried that they will sound crappy because of all the plastic I cut. If they do I'll get some baffles.

Ok, they're in and not too bad in terms of loudness, however the mid range quality in the front is not impressing me. I don't think its the speakers themselves, just that I cut out so much plastic there is empty space around the diameter of the speaker. Anyone know if there is some material that will fill the space and keep the speaker sturdy but can also be removed easily?
