Did anyone get a letter in the mail about the lower pinion bearing or pinion steering gear assembly in a 96 that is on recall? I just got my 96 not to long ago and this just came in the mail this week.

You need to take it in. The problem is the pinion bearing which MAY come apart and cause steering problems. If the bearing comes apart you will not be able to turn left or have great difficulty doing so.

Weird, so I just take it into the GM dealer or what? I used to have a 96' cavalier untill i totalled it so maybe they think I still have it....

That's right, I remember that recall as well. I believe it said something about if you turned the ignition but the engine didn't start, there was a possiblility of the starter getting to hot and starting a fire.

Does it pull to one side when you are braking?

Nope no pulling... the steering creeks when i turn the wheel like when i am parkin the car... and i get these shutters when i am accelerating... the car wobbles quickly from side to side at around 20 mph then goes away and it happens again at around 40 mph.... My brakes finally work like a swiss watch...

The ignition recall is on 98-01 j bodys. What they do is install a relay going to ur start, what was happening is if the car would not start and the key was held in the start position the ignition switch would heat up from high current and start on fire.
the pinion bearing is on 96-98 j bodys. What they do is inspect and replace the pinion bearing in the rack and pinion or the entire rack and pinion itself if the bearing has started to seperate, the driver experienced an intermittent loss of power steering assist when making left turns, usually at low speeds. Power assist is normal in right hand turns.
I work at a chevy dealer and have done both these recalls and they don't take that long to do at most a hour each one. and all recalls are free.
