Transmission Trouble!!!!!!!

I have a 1994 K1500 Z71 that has been a great truck, however I have encountered a serious problem.

When put into gear, I have low (1) and will stay there until I get up enough speed, let off of the gas, then it will go into drive. It seems that there is no 2nd gear or overdrive... I know it has the 4L60E, but dont know anything about transmissions!!

Anyone have any ideas on what this might be? Any Help would be greatly appreciated!

Start by putting in a new fuel and possibly an air filter. It may be a problem with the throttle position sensor, but if you haven't replaced the filters they could cause the problem

yore gonna have to take it out. that is a notorious problem with the 4l60e. it is an internal electrical problem. do you still have reverse? if so it should be pretty cheap to fix

take a peek at the VSS. loss of signal will cause the e-model tranny to behave like that

You may try just replacing the solenoids before you rip the thing out. www.atsg.biz Buy yourself a manual about your particular transmission $20 and then diagnose and repair it yourself. Try contacting the techs at www.sonnax.com also. I believe these two places offer invaluable information.

I kind of had a similar problem. I have an 88 1500 Chevy Scottsdale. My problem was that it wouldn't shift at all until you let off the gas. It would go through all the gears...but you had to let off the gas before it would shift. Otherwise it would just redline. I replaced the TPS, Throttle Position Sensor, and it has worked Great since then! So that could be a possibility also. I was thinking I had a major transmission problem...but it just ended up being that little sensor, which isn't too hard to replace. It wasn't on mine anyway. So thats something to check out as well.

Good Luck

I do still have reverse... also someone told me that the Idle Air Controller could be causing this.. what do you guys think?

Another this is, that I DO NOT have the check engine light on!! Could it still be a VSS or TPS in this case?

Thanks For All Your Feedback!

hook up to a scan tool and drive, look at indicated speed. if not what the dash reads, then the vss is out.

IAC does not control the 4L60E (which you have) neither does the TPS, however, if the VSS goes then the PCM uses the TPS and MAP to infer vehicle speed and schedule a shift (albeit abrupt)

What does not having reverse do here? Mine wont shift unless I let off, but has NO reverse.

This is a 97 2500 4x4

Thanks

I had the exact same problem with my 94' k1500. I lost second gear and reverse both. I took it to the dealer and they fixed it for free!! There was some kind of problem that was very common and chevy will fix it for no cost. I had 60k on it when this happened. Hope this helps!

My 89 1500 with a 305 & a 3 speed (weird configuration) does this especially after its been running for a half hour or so on the highway and you get on surface streets where you have to put the automatic tranny through all of its gears. I'm hopin' it doesnt need a new tranny!!!
