I am wondering if anyone can tell me how to disconnect the door chime in the 2000 elantra. I located the chime itself but disconnecting it didn't work. I'm sure I have to disconnect a wire somewhere but I don't know where. any help would be appreciated. thanks

Welcome to the AF Elantra section.
According to the schematics in Hyundai Webtech (http://www.hmaservice.com/webtech/iindex.asp?id=394880905), disconnecting the chime bell should work. The chime bell is at M32 (http://www.hmaservice.com/webtech/iindex.asp?id=394882354&fpubid=2)The Red/yellow wire leading from it goes to the ignition key lock switch and the other blue wire goes to the ETACS. By disconnecting the component itself should work or at least the blue wire.

Updated: I typed brown for some strange reason in the text above, it is now corrected to blue.

I don't see a brown wire, just red, blue and yellow and if I unplug all of them the chime still goes off. unless maybe i'm disconnecting the wrong thing? but i'm pretty sure its the chime.

I corrected my text above, for some reason I typed in brown twice instead of the correct color of blue. Sorry about that.
Anyway, back to the problem at hand. It should stop sounding off. The colors leading off of the M32 component (chime bell) are those of the 2000 model. The 2001 model changes to a green wire and blue wire and the component is at M30. I checked both in case you had a late model year change. But your description of the wire colors indicate a 2000. Regardless, I am still stumped as to why it will continue to chime if its disconnected. The ETACS is sending the signal from pin # 9 of the ETACS to Pin # 1 of the M32 (chime bell connector) disconnecting it would prevent the signal being sent to the chime.
I'll investigate a bit further but its strange.
