is there any way to get the original key remade? mines looks really worn and it doesn't work very well on the doors and will not open the rear hatch. 94 blazer

I've had that done on both my 89 & 93. Call a local GM dealer Parts Dept to ask the details of what they'll need. Generally, there is an original lock code they'll use to remake it. Otherwise, youll need to have all new locks and keys made.

When the vehicle was purchased new, you should have received a knockout from the key with a code. This code number can be used by a GM dealer or a locksmith to punch (not cut on a key machine) a new key. I suppose now you will say that you bought the car used. Oh well, I guess it looks like new locks unless the VIN might help, this, I don't know.

I don't think the VIN will help with getting a BRAND NEW factory key.

Yes it will, I don't know about the cut off year but 4 years ago I had lost a set of keys to my car at work (89 Camaro) I gave them the VIN and they looked it up and made me the keys that came with it from the factory but somebody changed out the ign lock so it didn't work.

If that was true, I would walk up to someone's corvette, read and mark down the VIN and then go get keys at the local dealer made and go and steal it.

You get what I am saying, it is not that easy or anyone could realistically rip off anyone's car.

First off, you can't just walk in and give a VIN. Ten years ago I did this. However, they wanted to see my driver's license and the owner's card for the vehicle before they did anything.

Is it still possible? I have no idea. But it was at one time.

Ah, no one mentioned the drivers license and ownership part.

I'm guessing that you have to show your license and your insurance card IF you can use your VIN to get a key made.

Instead of guessing, read the previous posts. But then, this was in Pennsylvania.
