79 camaro major acceleration problems

ok i bought a 79 camaro with a 305 engine a few weeks ago, and it came with a 2barrel carb and a old old intake, so it ran like just, had very little aceleration, dident even spin the tires, well i threw in a new 600 edelbrock carb and edelbrock intake and new lifters and few other things and its still not geting acceleration i mean i can push the pedal to the floor and it will take a good 40 secounds to get up to 60 !!!!

if anyone has ANY ideas on this i would be really apreshative about it, im a beginer with cars and would like any and all advice !

hmm i know that they were a little slow back then cause of the oil crisis but i didnt think they were that slow, how many miles does it havea nd what transmission

97,000 stock, and automatic - i was told that i dont have a passing gear and that might make a diffrence but it wouldent make that big of a diffrence

how is the air filter, and oil?

new air filter \ new oil change \ new radator \ new oil filter \
