Hi, I'm new to auto maintenance...Dad never taught me like he should have...anyways
My 1999 Explorer Sport no longer idles. when i start it, it will not turn over until i press the gas some...and when i let off the gas the engine konks out. any ideas as to what this might be? i've been searching and am going to check the IAC valve and also do an oil change since i'm almost at 3000 miles since the last. any help would be greatly appreciated!! My Explorer has the 4.0L SOHC 6-cylinder engine. Thanks!!

hey hamm-
i replaced my IAC (idle air control valve) and that fixed the whole problem. turns out it was stuck and needed free movement in order to idle at all. hope that helps ya!

yes the IAC should do the trick and if not the look to TPS (throttle positoning sensor) and a haynes manual will help you trouble shoot your explorer

If you want to make sure that the IAC is the problem, take off the stuff needed to get to it and hit it with a screw driver to get it moving again. I have the same problem on my 01 sport. Once i bang it around a bit it will work again for another 4-6 months. Or spring for the 150.00 and have one put in if you dont feel comfortable doing it yourself.

I have this exact problem in my 2001.
How does one get to the idle air control valve? Where is it and what do I need to take off.
Thanks,
Tom

tommcl,
You can prolly go to an autoparts store and get that part but beware doing your own maintenence it can be a pain in the ass.
If you've never done any work before...I suggest getting a haynes repair manuel...they base there books on a complete tear down of the vehicle.....
get those at the parts store to...
if you don't have any tools, my advice is take the truck up to the parts store and try em before you buy em.
If you have any trouble go ahead and post I got an all-data program for techs.... good luck.
Oh yea....don't drink any beer until you finish the job, trust me on that one.
