Cavalier Lights/Wiring Problems

I bought a set of Pilot brand fog lights for behind the mesh in my front bumper on my '97 Cavalier. They are 12V - 55W lights. Just the small halogen lamps. I mounted them this morning and the directions called for them to be wired to the battery and operated with a switch that would be mounted somewhere under the dash. I decided that I wanted them wired directly to my headlights instead (Not daytime driving lights). Each fog light has 2 wires coming out of the back. I removed my headlight assemblies and cut the 2 wires going to my headlights (Blue and pinkish red). I thought that all I had to do was splice the wires from the fog lights to the 2 wires on the headlights to get them to work correctly. With both wires cut in half to my right headlight, I touched one wire from the fog light to one of the headlight wires and all my headlights came on. (No key on, car not running and headlight switch off). I then decided to just splice the headlight wires back together like the were from the factory and leave the fog lights unhooked until I could find out some more info on how to install them. When I hooked the headlight wires back together, the right side headlight and daytime running lights are real dim (only on the right side). I didn't even attempt the left side after this mess. Can anyone please tell me what I did wrong and why the right side lights are real dim now. I thought that maybe I ruined the bulbs when I touched the wire together, so I bought 2 new bulbs and the lights are both still dim. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Well, after checking the fuses I found that the 15 amp fuse to the right headlight was blown. Replaced the fuse and everything works fine. I still can't understand how the right headlight worked (even dim) with the fuse blown. Live and learn! Bill
