I was at a shop today, and I was asking about the Koni Yellow struts, and the guy said Koni Yellows weren't as good as the KYBs, and he recommended them over the Koni Yellows. What are your guys' recommendations between the two?

Hi, I really don't know the exact right choice between those two.
But many people in the forum recommend Koni, also I asked more than one performance shops.
I use Koni and they're nice, but I never use KYB.

Anyone who claims KYB shocks are better than Koni Yellows must be banging their head against a wall and smoking crack at the same time, otherwise they would know better. It's not thatKYB are or aren't good, it's just a well known fact that in the realm of adjustable shocks for performace use, Koni has the market cornered in terms of absolute quality and range of adjustment. The only area where Koni doesn't have it all is that their adjustment only affects rebound, if they were double adjustable (affecting rebound and compression) they would be absolutely perfect. As they are, Koni Yellows are extremely durable, easily rebuildable, and generally come with excellent valving and adjustment for most any street performance spring rate.

Huh?
Maybe its the market, but the Konis I know and love on my non-Honda are available in versions adjustable for both jounce and rebound, ie the Koni yellow DA (double adjustable). The yellow also available in a SA (single adjustable) flavor. And a "series 30" flavor which is a heavy duty race shock.
The KYBs are okay, but they don't work well on lowered cars, can't handle the springs a Koni can, and fade under abuse. Either our speed shop friend is doing the crack/head banging thing, has a bigger profit margin off KYBs, or just plain doesn't know what he's talking about, or all 3.

yeah, that's what I thought too. I've heard nothing but good things about the Koni Yellows, and I've never heard of anyone saying KYB's are better than Koni's, but it just seemed weird the guy was trying to talk me OUT of getting a more expensive product. So I'm gonna go with my first choice, the Koni Yellows.
btw the guy said something about Koni Yellows blowing easily. Is this true or what?

No it's not, I've never known anyone who's blown Koni shocks when using them in the right applications.

he said he blew them while he was "on the track"
and he also said he's used all of the main brand names, and they've all blown on him except for KYB

Well "he's" full of shit. I could easily paint this guy into a corner during a conversation with his supposed suspension knowledge, but there's no need. Just look at all the race winning shock manufactueres and point out how many cars use KYB shocks. I don't know for sure how many amateur racers might use them, but I've never heard of any serious competitors winning races. Hell, their own site compares their damping ratios to other manufacturers ON A TRUCK, with stock springs no less.

I've got the KYB AGX shocks and they're double adjustable. But the rebound and compression both adjusts at the same time. I don't know but I think I preferred a shock that has only rebound adjustment or at least make it where you can adjust each one seperately.
I always thought the Koni Yellows were double adjustable and have a shorter shaft and casing, no?

Nope, the standard Koni yellows are single adjustable only, and would only come with a shortened case if Koni chose to design them that way for whatever particular application. The thing about Koni is that they do so much for motorsports you can order up a custom Koni Yellow in just about any configuration imaginable, from shortened cases to independently adjustable DA's, and if you're a professional you can spec out any internal valving you like.
