What did you want when you were 16?

I've just come up with the idea that I could buy by niece and nephew aspiration cars when they get their licenses. The niece is three next week and the nephew is right at two months. I'm not rich, but I've got a lot of time.

In case you're unfamiliar with the term, aspiration cars are cars that people aspire to. They tend to make people turn heads when they drive by. Today, asperation cars could be anything from a Prowler, SSR or Thunderbird to a 911. You might not see these cars everyday, and often, they're not practical, but they are beautiful vehicles.

I was thinking about buying a pair of today's aspiration cars to give on a 15th or 16th birthday. Cars tend to reach the bottom of their market value about ten years after they're made.

How do I know I won't give a flop? Well, giving any teen a car for their birthday will go over well, but to maximize the effect, I want to look at history.

So, when you got your first license, what car made around the year of your birth (+/- 5 years) would you most have liked to have owned?

Me, I was born in 1976, and when I got my license, I would have loved to have recieved a DeTomaso Pantera, Porsche 928 or Ford Bronco as a gift.

When I was 16, I wanted an Integra Type R. A couple years later, I'm looking more into cheap RWD sporty coupes, like the Camaro and 240SX.

If you care at at all about your nice and nephew you will buy them a nice safe FWD econo car. "Aspiration cars" such as a 911 will only put a 16 year old in a hospital or worse.

You can buy them super sports cars when their over twenty if they have a clean record.

How ironic, when I turned 15 and a half and got my permit, my best friend also had a 1988 Mustang GT that I loved. I would still probably get a Fox Body 5.0 if I could find one in good condition, but they're all so old.

id settle for an rx7, mr2 turbo, 300zx, supra, and pretty much anything like that

true...but if they are like me...if im gonna die i might as well get it over with and have as much fun while doing it....now im not saying im going to drive on the wrong side of the road playing chicken with 18 wheelers...actually that sounds kinds fun...lol J/K...but i wouldnt put it past me...any ways....as long as im not endangering anyone elses life ill have as much fun as i can have...i just dont want to hurt anyone else...and i also remember hard work=good rewards...good rewards=fun...its why ive ben saving up for a vehicle since i was 11...i am currently in the market for a '95-'98 low mileage extended cab light truck or a '98-2000 little bit higher milage extended cab truck...and after buying all this i have already calculated it out to where i can but this truck...put a decent stereo in it...pay insurance on it for one year...and have enough money to start a project car...hopefully on a earlyer year 2nd generation RX-7....less than 2000.... as long as i dont grow to be an immobile geezer im happy....

im assumeing you dont like imports....im j/w....why do people like you not like imports? and im not tlaking about the honda acords with cut springs and 35% or darker tinted glass and heavy assed crappy stereos and heavy assed body kits and neons everywhere and a fart can exaust....and then the owners call them fast...when the car can barely turn if it wanted to and it runs like 20's in the 1/4 mile....im talking about imports in general....also, would you hate an '89 Honda CRX HF with a turbocharged B18? or a mazda RX-7 that is pushing 450hp? or how about a WRX that has true altime AWD (actually its 4wd) and 378 dynoes whp? or a '95 240sx that is probably the best local drift car i know of....all of these cars are real cars and theyare...for the most part..."rice" free...as in no body kits neons vinyl graphics etc... im just wondering why hardcore muscel car era lovers hate imports so much....

Maybe cause it lacks the cool factor of Raw power and a blower stickin thru the hood with the rear end jacked up... granted its not so good on the turns but feelin the raw power under the throttle, not many imports shake when you accelerate like that.

Btw A fast Japanese car is cool as long as it looks nice, CRX... not cool... no matter what sorry. RX7's and WRX's are sweet cant compete with a 3000GT but still nice :D

oh yes it is kool to have poor motor mounts and loose all that torque due to the engine rocking so much....and then when i try to turn the corner the wheel hop is so bad it almost makes me cry....no when i say i like muscel cars im tlaking about a GT500ks 185mph supecharged and nitros asisted....not a Chevelle SS with massive rear tires and skiny as a pencil front tires that can accelerate quick enough to run 9.0sec in the 1/4 mile but if you asked it to turn at any rate of speed it would flip

I don't like Kerry that much. He flip-flops on too many issues. But I HATE the Republican party. If you're not white, male, and you love titties and your guns, you're a fucking outcast. And the fact that Bush lied to get us into Iraq to finish what his daddy couldn't doesn't help either.

FordJunky
09-11-2004, 05:04 PM
oh boy where to start... well mustangs in general, they were the dream car (ive wanted a mustang since i can remember) back before specs or money mattered... when i use to walk to school (3-5 grade) there was a red mustang convertible (95-95), dont know if it was a 6 or 8 and didnt care... when i got older i got into the classics (always wanted a 69 mach one even if it isnt the rarest or fastest) then as i got older (15-16) and realized i was poor... i really wanted a 77 cobra II jet black with gold stripes cause it was the cheapest cobra... then i gotta job! and wasnt poor anymore so i quickly set my sites on a 78.. oh ya... then i was introduced to the fox body cobra... it looked so sweet, hard to believe what a cheap body kit could do for the fox body's looks... but overall the one car i wish i could own over any other would have to be the herts shelby 350... OMG that car blows my mind... not just that its a shelby or the fact that its like the rarest mustang but the fact that back then you could rent a race car for the weekend... thats like renting a porche or sumthin and on top of that knowing that u were supposed to dive it hard. its a serious piece of automotive history...

am i a little byest towards mustangs? well mustangs werent the only cars i aspired to own, ive always wanted a porche, if i had it my way id drive a mustang everyday and come home to my porche... (unless i had the hertz shelby, then it would be the other way around) but if i could choose from any of the NEW aspiration cars and money werent an issue it would be between an f40, saleen, gt, vanquish and porche carrera... i wish i was rich...

Anyways, I thought about the question more, and I'd probably take one of the high-end Japanese sports cars. Supra RZ, RX-7 Spirit R, Impreza WRX STi, Integra Type R (or even NSX Type R!), Evo VI Tommi Makinen Edition...I don't think I could pick just one, though :)

Just for the record, I'm going to delete all of the political comment posts from this thread. It's far off topic, inflammatory, and we have a whole different forum for political mudslinging if that's what everyone wants to do.

And, while I'm on the subject, let's stop right here - right now, with the pointless "import versus domestic" debate. People are allowed to dream about whatever car they want. When I was six I thought it'd be the coolest thing in the world to own an Amphicar.

http://www.amphibiousvehicle.net/amphi/A/AmphiCar.jpeg

All a matter of taste and opinion. Hardly anything to debate there.

I wanted a Honda Civic Si-R, I got a VW Jetta 1.8, probably a good thing, as I'd have killed myself with the Civic. I don't want an Si-R any more though, that's doing things by halves. Give me an EK9 Civic or DC2 Integra Type R any day.

That was my realistic dream car though. My fantasy car back then was an Aston Martin DB5.

My dream car back then, was a '61 Jaguar E-type, series 1, 3.8 roadster, in scarlet red, with black leather. To me, that car was, and still is, sex on wheels.

PS. you're not helpin on the BMW front 95dxcivic. Check out the BMW home page, then tell us which one it is. Or give us some pointers. Eg. Coupe, cabrio, saloon, estate. Engine size would help too. BMW's are a good brand to be into though.
