The weirdest thing happened the other day.....
Alright....well if you go to freeipods.com or something like that you can sign up to get urself a free ipod.....my friends have gotten their's so i thought that maybe i could get one too. well the first step was to register an account and then check "agree" or "pass" to random ads that you had to click thru. i thought that a requirement was to click on one of the ads (actually you didnt have to). so i clicked on this ad that said "poetry.com - enter a poem and win $1,000".
So i went on this site and made up a poem off the top of my head......its like 15 lines long and i sent it in (about a month ago). a few days ago i got this envelope in the mail and it said "poetry.com" on the front of it....so i quickly opened it up. there was a letter in it that said "congratulations vlad, your poem has made it to the semi-finals. out of 1,000 poems your poem has made it in the top 50 and is getting published in a book along with your biography which will then be sold in popular retail stores around the U.S".
I was like "what the hell, this is so wack, no way". and then i read on and it said that my poem has been copyrighted by myself and that i have to initial a box to prove that its my own work and that if there are any errors......i should correct them right on the paper. so i did all of this stuff and then further down on the paper it said that prizes will be awarded to all seminfinalists including a t-shirt and medal.
So now i'm waiting to find out if i'll place in the top 3. if i place in the top 3, there is a cash prize ranging from 100 bucks to 1 grand. and if you get 1st place you get entered into an annual poetry.com contest for 10 grand.
you guys probably think i'm a dork or something but i'm really not, haha. its just so weird that this happened. wish me luck.

be carefull with stuff like that and be damn carefull on what you sign. most things like that are a scam. they will say alot of good things but in the end all they are really asking is if they can steal your work or have you send them money so you can see your poem put in a 20 page book that noone will buy
.my opinion.

yea, well if its a scam then i didnt lose any money out of it. and if its a scam and they take my poem i dont care....it was only a poem that i made up off the top of my head within a minute. if it isnt a scam then my poem is officially copyrighted and i might make some big bucks, haha.
here's the poem:
There is this one day
In the month of May
Which was pretty bad
And also sad.
I brought home a pet fish.
It got caught on a dish
And was eaten by my mom and dad.
So I bought a cat
And named him Pat.
He ran outside after a dog,
And vanished down the street,
Into the fog.
This all happened in one May day.
And i must say...
It left me in dismay.

yea, its not really a scam, i get a letter like yours last year, and then they followed up with letters inviting me to the awards banquet or something like that in florida where they'd announce the winners (didn't mean that i won, they just wanted me to come becuase i'd have to pay, i didn't go) the last i heard from them was a letter they sent asking me if i wanted to pay for a short biography to be included (quite expensive) with my poem and if i wanted to buy a copy of the book

haha, a few years ago I also sent a poem that I made up on top of my head and they said I was a semi finalist. I figured I was the only one who entered so that's why I got the letter. Later I figured that they wanted me to "confirm" my address so they can send me ads, those bastards.

Walking Forward Looking Back
Have you ever walked forward,
Looking back to see from where you have come?
Have you noticed how the uphills slide down,
And the downhills rise up?
How the familiar curving path recedes,
Twisting in the opposite direction,
A mirror image.
How, sometimes, the wind is at your back,
And fallen leaves dance circles round your feet.
Have you forgotten the hurdles you crossed?
How the point of departure can rarely be seen,
Only fondly remembered
With compassion born
Of distance navigated.
Have you ever walked forward,
Looking back to see from where you have come?
And noticed with amazement
That you had not realized
How far you had gone,
How much ground had been covered,
Until you turned to look behind.
And, now, do you see where you are going --
and why?
It's shit, but its what i have.....

Actually it is kinda a legit scam... see they get 1000's of people to write crappy poems then publish them in a book. Now it doesn't cost you anything to do it and it doesn't cost them a whole lot to publish them, but guess what I bet about 3/4 of the people will now rush out and buy the book that their poem got published in for 30- 40 bucks a pop, oh and don't forget copies for your parents and grandparents and etc. My sister did it and got the same notice you did from a different company, my girlfriend did it years ago, and my girlfriends grandmother did it god only know how many centuries ago (good thing she doesn't know what a computer is or I would be in trouble for that little dig).
bottom line is it has been around for a long time, and while you really aren't getting scam scammed, it is still a money making scam set up by whatever company is publishing the poems. I mean come on someone who never really figures on having any writing talent all of a sudden is a published poet? wouldn't you want to go buy the book to show everyone?

yeah its not really a scam per say, I mean they are putting your poem in a book that will be for sale and they will send you a copy for a fee. but like I said its not like they are paying you for your work, they are slapping in a book then selling the book (your own work) back to you. they will make a considerable amount off of the book sales just to the people who contributed poems alone.
