96 2.4L Manual Trans - A couple problems

First problem is the car sometimes (rarely) wont start. The fuel pump turns on as well as the dash lights and accessories but the car will not even try to turn over. I figure it's in the ignition system somewhere and I would like to narrow it down and fix it myself if it's easy to do with basic tools. I don't trust car mechanics not to rip me off.


Second problem is a sound coming from the front of the care similar to a card in a spoked bicycle wheel. I am guess it could be a wheel bearing (if Sunfires have them) or maybe something like a CV joint or but once again, I am not sure and don't trust car mechanics.

The no-start is more likely than not a neutral safety switch. On your car, it is mounted under the hood where the linkage hooks to the trans. the noise you describe sounds like a hub bearing to me. If you can do brakes you can change a hub. buy a quality repair manual, andfollow their directions. You will need two tools for the job, a 30mm axle nut socket (go to zone, they have a free tool loan program) and a t-55 torx socket to remove the three bolts holding the hub to the spindle.
