Ok guys, I need help!!! We own a 1994 Suburban 2500 454 7.4L, about 2 months ago the tranny went out... we lost overdrive, hard shifting, slipping etc. We took it to the place we purchased it from (we bought it used a year ago). They agreed to rebuild the tranny and add the $$ to the back of our auto loan since we don't have $2600 sitting around to fix the beast.
Before we took it in my husband recorded the #'s on the tranny, it was an 868 something something something, Turbo Hydromatic Transmission, there was another DLP or DPL # on there as well. In addition the tranny was all metal colored (aluminum? or something) as was the tranny pan.
It took them approx 2 weeks to rebuild the tranny, during which time we were left stranded since we have only the 1 vehicle.
When we went to pick up the truck they told us that they took OUR tranny and rebuilt it with all new parts. Before we left the place my husband looked underneath the truck and noticed that the tranny pan was not the one that was on there when we had it, this one is spray painted black w/ rust and big gouges in it. We mentioned this, but didn't think it was cause for a big scene.
We left the place with the truck, everything seemingly running good. 5 miles down the road the front pump blows, tranny fluid everywhere, this truck is not going anywhere but back to the shop.
we take it back, they tell us that they'll look at it blah blah blah. we tell them while they have it to "try and find our original pan"
another week without a truck later, I'm told to come and get the truck (meanwhile my husband is out of town on business for the week)
I get the truck, they ask for more money, I shrug them off.
All seems well. My husband asks me to check the #'s the see if they match. (keep in mind I'm a girl) I tell him that it looks like they do, also there is yet another different tranny pan. hmmm???
the next day on my way to pick up our 13 y.o., with the 2 y.o. in the back seat, the tranny starts shifting hard taking off from the stop lights. only in the first gear it shifts into.
I call the shop, they tell me to drive it home, if it blows up then the builder has to pay because the dealership can't afford to keep fixing my truck. (keep in mind, neither can I!!!)
well, its stops shifting hard.
Husband got home last night, crawls under the truck...
the first set of ##'s match.... the second set of numbers is no where to be found. this is a hydromatic transmission.... not a turbohydromatic.... it's not the original pan (again) and this tranny is black...
IT'S NOT OUT TRANNY!!!
does anyone know if there is a difference in the turbo, and the non-turbo?
could this be a 4L60E instead of the 4L80E and how do we know??? my husband is ready to start ringing necks!!!!

I would count the number of pan bolts, this is definitely a marker of which tranny it it.
4L60E; 4 Speed; 16 Bolt Shallow Pan 2-1/4" Thick, Flat Bottom
4L80E; 17 Bolt Pan; 4 Speed
Take every set of numbers from the new tranny and the old tranny and have them cross-referenced at the parts counter of any GM dealer. The dealer can be very helpful as long as you know who to ask and how to ask them. I would suspect that they actually purchased a remanufactured transmission, hence the black paint. Being that yours is actually a common tranny, I would suspect a reman unit would cost about $800 They will end up pocketing alot of $$$$$$ of of you. I would bring up three little letters, BBB Better Business Bureau. The only reason for the scrape marks on the pan, is from the transmission jack that was used to install it. Just as long as the pan is not dented in severly. Also, when you go to the dealer, take your VIN to a service writer, preferably a woman, I find them to offer more help anyway. Ask the service writer to run your VIN in the GM vehicle database and to give you a copy of your RPO(Regular Production Options) codes and their definitions. This list of RPO codes is usually printed on a sticker inside of the glove box, or maybe back in the jack stowage area under a plastic panel. I have a 96 Z71 ext cab pickup and mine is in the glove box. Yours may be somewhere strange. The RPO's will tell you what tranny came with your truck. I would want to know from the rebuilder EXACTLY what was done. If you want to know what the procedure for rebuilding your stock tranny would be, visit www.atsg.biz and order a manual for your tranny from the bookstore. Cost is about $20 This way you have something to go off of. In fact you can also look at some of the color posters they have available to identify the tranny. They are for sale, but the preview pictures are detailed enough for reference. I would scream foul, personally. I would want to know exactly why they needed to replace your tranny instead of rebuilding it. It would have to be a catastrophic internal failure for that. I think someone is dicking you over on this deal. Get some other opinions, and research the forums. I believe you can get this resolved and may even end up getting some money back. I have rebuilt A/T for others before and have not had the problems you are experiencing, it sounds like someone was really trying to cut corners. Good Luck. -Chris
