No 4th, Reverse

2000 Bravada...

Driving along last night, and surprise!, 4th cuts out.

This morning no reverse.

Fluid and filter changed 3 months ago, fluid level OK.

Any thoughts?

UPDATE:

There is a whirring noise coming from the tranny in park, and while decelerating to a stop. I'm thinking TORQUE CONVERTER...

Anybody have any experience with this?

Thanks.

Not sure, but this sounds like bad shift solenoids on the trans.

ok, pretty sure the 2000 Bravada has GM's 4L60E Transmission. Known problem with this tranny: Sun Gear Shell. When it breakes along the spline (which is thin), second, fourth, and reverse are lost... same problem I'm having.

Question, who's heard of this happening after only 40,000 miles?

It's at a Lee Myles right now for a quote to be rebuilt... anyone have strong feelings about paying the extra $1,000 for a factory remanufactured instead of the rebuild?

Personal opinion - go with the local rebuild. Having had a little experience with things mechanical, I've found no $1000 advantage to "factory" work. This assumes, of course, that you've got a good shop. Check references.

Sorry for your luck, My 200 is currently down due to this, 2000-3000k repair cost if you dont do it yourself. I am going to swap a 94 bravada tranny in its place. Sun gear gets thin on the edge and breaks apart and then pushes frag through the whole tranny.

Hi - I just got a 2000 Bravada 2 months ago. Went to backup last night, heard a loud bang and now have no reverse. I didnt try driving it to see if second and fourth went out because of a loud whirring noise. A visual inspection shows nothing bad underneath like a driveshaft coupling.

I have heard of the sun gear shell weak problem and am wondering if this is a classic case? or maybe something else I should try? I would appreciate any advise whatsoever. Not entirely sure what to do next.

I reciently had the same problem: no 2nd, 4th, or reverse. Got to pay over $2000 to replace with a rebuilt.

I was wondering if anyone has triied to write GM for some resultion, since this "sun gear" seems to be a common problem, maybe there should be a recall???
Or maybe some $ help for those of us that "got" to replace/rebuild for this problem....???

Had the same thing happen to me last year with 65,000 miles on it. Spent 1,500 getting the tranny rebuilt & you'll never guess what happens after the 1 year warranty expires, the same dam thing happens. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: So instead of rebuilding it, i had my buddies shop put in a GM factory rebuilt transmission with a 3 year 50,000 mile warranty. Cost me $2,600. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
