I recently purchased a 1997 trans am off of this guy, and everything checked out except the tires, which are really worn out. Whenever i slam on the accelerator from a stop, first the tires would spin for a few seconds, then once the car gets moving, the whole front end slides back and forth wildly. is this normal or could this be because of the wear on the tires?

The tires could certainly affect the way the car handles. I would check the entire front end, it sounds like you may have some other problems going on here. You also did not say if the tires are worn evenly. If they show signs of cupping or wear on the inside or outside only they could be telling you to have the front end worked on. I would check the ball joints, upper and lower control arm bushings and tie rod ends, just to be on the safe side.
