starter problems

I have a 93 3.0l 5spd 4X4. When I try to start it occasionally all that i hear is the click of the solenoid, nothing else happens. It will usually start if i turn the key again, sometimes after many attempts. The starter is brand new, so i dont think this is the problem since it worked fine for about three months. I also noticed that the key seems to not quite turn right in the ignition, it is loose and the key and ignition do not always turn and stay in their proper positions. I was wondering if this could be the problem. I was also wondering if it could be the main power wire to the starter or the battery itself.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Dave.

Also I was wondering if anyone knows where I can find (or knows how) a procedure for removing the heads on the 3.0l. Like what all has to be done etc.

I would check your ground wire and make sure it is not Corroded. That is the advice i got when i changed my starter..

Also, my ranger the key will come right out when it is running.. i can just pull it out and it will stay running.. so i am not to sure if that would be a problem with yours.. probably not.. but you never know.. hope this helps.

Oh and about the heads... go to www.autozone.com and go under repair info.. and go from there.. i am sure there is pictured explaination of how to do it..

Your ignition lock cyl controls the ignition switch. If there is binding, looseness, etc., you should start there. The ignition switch is basically two plastic plates with contacts molded into them and when you turn your ignition lock cyl a connecting bar makes the one plate slide over the other. If things are catewampus, the connection can be intermittent.
