slippin tranny

Ok I have a 98 GA GT 3.1 L, automatic, When i floor it, it hauls, but when i m cruisin down the road and have to slow down then floor it, it acts as if the tranny is slippin when it gets up there in rpms. Is it supposed to do that or is it a big prob? I dont know that it has ever had the tranny fluid changed and it has about 150,000 miles on it. Hope i dont have to replace the tranny, but i would if need be, I have owned about 15 different cars and the GA is by far the best i have ever owned.

If the fluid is still red, I would say it's still ok. You may have a sticky shift solenoid that is hanging up under heavy load. The shift solenoids are located in the valve body, which on most Grand Ams requires lowering the engine/trans out of the cradle for clearance. If your fluid is brown and burnt smelling, its tranny time.

you can try adding a thick trans additive by the brand name LUCAS. it says it guarantees to stop slipping and hard shifting. its about $7 for a bottle... and you can get it at any auto parts store. I would give that a shot before spending alot of money on a new trans.
