There are dozens and dozens of t3/t4 style turbos, so you might want to clarify which one you're speaking of =) However, there are some hybrid bolt-on t3/t4's that companies like AGP and PTE make that kick major ass. Like the PTE SCM50 is a much better turbo than an 18g (power wise, and spoolup isn't bad either!), IMO. Plus, why spend the money on an 18g when you can get a better turbo (mentioned above) for almost the SAME price, or even cheaper (the PTE SCM50 is going for $800 brand new!).

You might be sad to learn that there is a lot more research involved than a simple answer. You are comparing a 'type' of a turbo, with a specific one. There are dozens of common DSM t3/t4 combinations, and probably damn near 50 total if not more.
Garrett is a manufacturer of turbos, and the common two series are 'T' and 'GT'. Within 'T', you have T3, T4 as the most common. Within T3 you have several choices of compressor wheel, turbine wheel, and housings for both (or at least turbine, im not sure).
You can see how there are many combinations of Garrett turbos, and 'T3/T4' really means T3 exhaust side and T4 compressor side. It's a common name because people liked the way this combo's characteristics flowed.
Anyway, all you need to know for a DSM application is that most Garrett turbos are a big upgrade. A smaller Garrett known as the 50 trim is popular, and flows equal to or better than a 20g mitsubishi turbo, 44 lbs/min airflow.
Bottom line, you probably aren't ready for a T3/T4, and 18g's aren't good either. If you want turbo suggestions, give your setup, goals and budget.
EDIT>>You beat me to post :)
To continue, there are manufacturers that brand turbos, like an AGP RS49 (a 50 trim), the FP green is a beefy 50 trim, etc. I won't go on too long because there is an excellent post by 95 GSXracer about some of the info you need to know. http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=156363
If i find another of Kevin's post (which im looking for now on RKO) ill post that too.
