SR20 vs VG30 vs RBs'

This is something that has been puzzling me for the longest about you guys, I understand that the RB and SR are JDM and do come with good levels of performance. I don't get why someone would go buy a SR or RB and overlook the VG30DETT. I mean lets be for real, getting an SR might be cheaper, but if you factor in the difficulty of not being able to go to your local Autozone or dealer and buying parts, I bet it gets really costly, then if you tare up somethings, you have to get them from specialty shops, and this causes inflation. Now those who go for the RB series, have a little more cash, some got tons, but for those with a regular 9-5, after buying the parts and installation, I know to get RB parts is a lot harder and costly than the SR, and all the down falls of the SR recurr in the RB except they cost more.
Now I know it gets you more props to have JDM stuff in your ride, but the VG30 is a good motor, I saw one with 750Hp, it passes emissions, parts are locally available, and the V block is much shorter than the I6 which improves handling, and also doesn't cause a big fuss about fittment with its Turbos, also the V configuration sits alot lower than the inline, factor these in and you have the best choice for your ride. Now I realize the RB is a pretty motor to look at, and there are 1300Hp RBs, but past 800Hp it becomes difficult to pass emissions on a six cyl. Now for the guys who say there are 1300Hp RB, you can take a VG30 and get that power, just not too many ppl have tried it, and don't forget the 300ZX has very limited space to install the necesarry goods to get that power, but in another car, I bet you can get that power.
Also, some say the VG30 is very expensive, I priced them, and the whole front clip was $2500. Give or take the abuse it has undergone, remember, this is a local engine, so you can take the cash you saved and use it to rebuild the motor. So for the price of the RB, you'll have you a better handling, car with a new engine.
I mean, I would like a pretty looking engine, but it better put out, otherwise, give me the ugly motor that puts out. Correct me if I am wrong.

Yeah... but try squeezing a wide-ass VG30DE(TT) into a 240! You are better off with an SR20 or RB series engine. These damn engines are even squeezed into the Z32 and are very hard to work on! Not saying it can't be done... I'm sure it can. It would also be cool to see.
A lil' more added info: The VG30DE(TT) weighs about as much as an RB engine. VG30DE has 222HP while the TT has 300HP! Parts are readily avaible! This motor was in production back in the late 80's! Once again: Parts are readily avaible! There are many Z32's with VG30's putting out 500-800HP! There are even some putting out way over 1000HP (i.e. ESCORT Racing Drag Z32)!
However, I think that there is a substantial amount of dealers and shops that carry parts for the SR20's and RB's nowadays (compared to a few years ago)... they are not stupid or unaware what the 'in-thing' is and parts for these engines are becoming the norm. So I wouldn't necessarily say that parts are not avaible. It's becoming quite easy to find 'em and I'm sure prices will start to diminish.

Dude, I live in GA, there are a bunch of 240s with SRs' but you can't beat the convinience of AT-zone. The shop that I know can do a good job on SR swaps and RBs' is like 60 miles from my place, oneway, the nearest AT-zone is 4miles. And the VG30 is not hard to install, I measured it as I wanted to swap it, but then decided to go with the SHO motor instead, which is just as wide. My SHO motor fit so snuggly makind me wonder if nissan intended the 240 to have a larger motor.
Besides that, lets say you crack the block or warp the heads doing stupid shit, don't you think it will be pricy to replace an Sr or RB, remember you saved up for so long to buy this motor, now you have to go through the same shit over again????? even with out the fabrication this time, you will be forced to buy a whole new motor as oposed to just calling your local yards.
See there are some damages that are reversible, but the non-reversible ones are the ones I fear, a cracked block, warped heads etc, usually require a whole new engine.
I mean it is all in the buyers choice, I just like VGs cuz they are V-blocks, I really don't like In-line blocks. I believe the only engines meant to be Inlines are 4cyl. I do also like the W-blocks, allows you to cram more cyl in smaller space.

For the time and effort id have to put into getting a VG in a 240 id rather have an VQ30DET VH45DE or RB26DETT

I'm not sure the vg30dett will even fit (unmodified) into an s13, but a vg30det from a Leopard or similar certainly will. Not sure if you can easily get them in the US though. The semi-forged internals can be run to 25psi and above and i know an s13 with a vg30det and equivalent of a td06-25g making 315kw (about 430rwhp).

I'd go for the SR simply because it's lighter than the RB and VG. I don't need that much power.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but we are talking of engine swaps right, I don't think any of these motors will go in without any mods. Who can actually say they swapped in an RB without any modification. And a VG30 has been done before, and for the others, other than a VQ35 from the recent nissans, I said VG30 cause it is USDM, but all those other are JDM, if that was the case, I wiould rather get the RB than those other motors.
And I would rather have the VG30DETT than the VQ35 cuz the VQ is known to break the rods past 400hp.
Besides, I was talking about economy, not preference, my preference would be a S14 with a BMW V12 or a TT SHO motor (cuz it is pretty and powerful, see below), but cost and convinience wise, I think VG30DETT takes the cake.

SR is best engine to work on. VG is a pain to work on, poor design ..... every machanic will support me on this one .
VG do give you some power but you have to give money out more than it give you power.

I just skipped the "swap" step and bought a 300. Why bother putting the VG in a 240? Just buy a 300...

Except for this one. i pulled my Vg myself and am upgrading the turbos. its not as easy to work on as the KA in my 240 but then again its makin alot more power. And if you look at how its all laid out, the Vg isn't that complicated. You just have 2 banks of pistons so you double up on some tubing and hoses. Not a big deal. Anyone who has been around VGs would hardly call the "poor design". Bottom end good for 500hp easy, makin 300hp stock, huge aftermarket support and plenty of spare parts lying around because the Vg was a US engine.
VG do give you some power but you have to give money out more than it give you power.
Intake, cat back and an ecu have you sittin on 400 hp for 1500-2000 bucks. Thats pretty cheap. Considering thats just about all your ever going to get out of a SR without some really heavy changes so you can run some crazy 25-30 psi of boost then it looks even better.
I was going to swap my 240 with a RB25. I didn't really look into how much a VG swap would cost so I can't really compare the two. In the end I totaled how much it would cost to completely work over the 240 with the suspension, brake and other upgrades to run that much more power. I just bought a Z32 TT instead. But thats me.
EDIT: BTW If you are dead set on a 240 with an engine swap then I would probably just say get a SR. It will make probably as much power as you'll ever need even if it will cost more than a VG most likely ( I got Vg with 20k miles on it in perfect condition for 1900). If you want more power then an RB is probably an easier swap than an VG. I don't know, I didnt' look in it. Just stickin up for the power of the VG.

'''poor design''' i meant the way engine set up
it extremely hard for people to work on.
somebody in here working on VG head please share your experience
more HP doesn't mean anything SR 250 Hp can kill Z with 350 HP .

more HP doesn't mean anything SR 250 Hp can kill Z with 350 HP .
Ok first of all, there is no way a 250hp 240 will ever smoke a 350hp Z. A z car is around 400lbs heavier than a 240, but an extra 100hp to push that extra 400lbs, no way, Z-car wins. 250Hp/2700lbs vs 350Hp/3200lbs, you've got to be serious.
The reason why I would rather have a 240 with a VG30 is cause the 240 is lighter than the 300ZX, and also has a bigger engine bay than the Z32. More space= bigger turbos, intercoolers and easier to work in.Intake, cat back and an ecu have you sittin on 400 hp for 1500-2000 bucks. Thats pretty cheap. Considering thats just about all your ever going to get out of a SR without some really heavy changes so you can run some crazy 25-30 psi of boost then it looks even better.
Actually, 400hp is just the begining, they say the VG can handle a little over 500hp reliably, try getting that out of any 4cyl and see how much you are going to spend. See this is my view, I want the most power for the cheapest price. Now it is cheaper to swap in another powerful 4cyl to get to 250hp, but when trying to get 500-600hp, you will have to spend alot more than geting a bigger engine, also the power band of a 500hp will be alot better than that of a 4cyl, and also you get alot more torque.
And the reason ppl say the VG is hard to work on is cause it is in a Z32, they are fit very very tightly, but in a 240, things will become easier.
Besides, the whole basis of the post was cost effectiveness, for those of you who are mechanically inclined, the work you have to do to swap a front clip of a V6 or I-4 or I-6 is almost the same. See if the SR could run on the 240SX ECU and harness, then it would be the better choice, but if you have to install the SR harness, it is the same shit as swapping a VG or RB harness, I know cuz that is what I was doing. You have to remove the stock harness and re-route the new harness, or do the cheap way out and add the new harness to the old one leaving useless added weight. Unless you are a guru in electronis and you can actually reprogram ECUs, and remap harnesses.
I was just wondering OK, I didn't intend on pissing anyone off, I just hear so many guys saying, "I'm saving up around $3000-$4000 to swap my SR in, or short on cash and saving up for a SR swap", usually I'm like damn, why don't you just go to the Yard and spend that $1500-2500 and get you a Z32TT front clip, you end up spending around the same cash, and end up with more power, and your power caps are alot higher, and it is also more convinient, did I mention more power, 300HP vs 250Hp???????????????????? It was just a question thats all.

And this one. I've done more than just a little work on my VG and I don't mind it TOO much. Granted, I have the VG30ET and not the VG30DETT...it's all relative. If you learn your engine, be it the VG30E(T) or the VG30DE(TT), and get used to working on it, then it won't be as big of a deal. Looking into the engine bay at first, it is quite startling, but you get used to it as you learn...I have, at least.

No joke...you need to choose you words a little more carefully, man. The VG30DETT is so INSANELY over engineered that damn near the whole engine was used in nearly stock trim for all out racing. I've also found my VG30ET to be very reliable with plenty of potential...what more could you ask for?

How'd the NSX get involved here? How much does a Z weigh compared to a S13/S14 chassis? We are talking about SR powered 240's and VG powered Z's here! You wanna put a wager on a 250HP S13/S14 vs. a 350HP Z32? No way in hell that Z is gonna lose! :loser:

Yeah, how the hell did we get to an NSX, first off, it ain't in the same category as the 300Zx, and secondly, that $80K price tag has something to do with performance, and also don't forget the NSX is a mid engine RWD, like the Porche this helps in take off.
Secondly a Supra puts out 320hp bone stock, the Z I think was 300hp.
And finally, like I said earlier, ther is no way a 250HP 240sx will smoke a 350HP Z.
Now if the 240 had 300Hp, then I would agree.
And I think the NSX was a little lighter than that, and don't forget with it's 290HP it is N/A so no turbo Lag. There is a reason why a 600HP Supra can't smoke a 450HP Porsche GT2, that 150K price tag has something to do with it.
Secondly a Supra puts out 320hp bone stock, the Z I think was 300hp.

To me the plus side for a VG you can get it in and it will be street legal too without too much hassel involved BUT I am not sure so someone let me know if I am the engine has to be from the same year as the car(your swapping it into) or newer. SHO411 got any input on it? I'm not into the whole JDM scene mostly because I would prefer to drive my car on the road legally. Also to get a JDM motor to be street legal you will be losing a bit of power and I'm not sure if you could mod it after its done(again PLEASE correct me if im wrong)

he just used the NSX as an example... and the reasoning behind a car with less HP and Less torque beating a car that has more torque and that may way less...Is down to GEAR RATIOS...
RB25DE:
- Weighs more (big deal)
- Good Looks
- More work/aftermarket room than VG
- Really Good Power
- More Expensive
- Parts more scarce than SR or VG
SR20DE:
- Lighter
- Still Looks Good
- More work/aftermarket room than VG and RB
- Good Power for an Inline-4
- Kind Of Expensive
- Parts more scarce than a VG
VG30DE:
- Weighs more than SR
- "OK" looks
- Less work/aftermarket room than SR and RB
- Really Good Power
- Less Expensive
- Parts are more abundant than SR or RB
So this all boils down to what will you base your choice on? Also depends on whats "YOUR" "YOUR" opinion on which engine is the best.
*Yes i put 2 "YOUR"'s so you wouldnt miss them

Hmm well sr's are great for overall weight distro... thats why its a popular "drift" car.
RB's are for straight tracks and not ment for sr's who are looking for auto cross and drifting and road courses due to uneven weight.
Overall it doesnt matter how much is running to the crankshaft but a matter of how much are going to the wheels and how much weight them wheels have to push and the design of the veichle...
the VG is a nice engine... however i think it just belongs with the z32 z31... i have nothing against it but it does make nice TOP SPEED... however things like handling and acceleration is a different issue...
Run an stock sr...lets say s15 "silvia gen 15 that never made it state side" against a stock VG with the TT and we may see an instresting comparison when placed between a straight away and then to road course...
I havent seen or felt the VG nor have seen times of a stock s15's times so i cant say who will win... so its intresting... :)

Doubtful... but if you find one please post it! Z32 owners... let alone tuners in Japan are quite few. Older kinda crowd that are not that into 'racing' or raising ruckus and they tend to stick together. As for us... on this side of the pond... there are no S15's... but I know a bunch of TT boys that can whoop on SR powered s13/s14's...

and I'm not saying that I've SEEN a 240 with a VG swap, but I've heard of one.

Sorry, I've been realy busy lately.
Badman, there was a link to an old post, and this guy was doing one in his garage, I can't remember, but I will try and find it.
And most of you guys are wrong, see, everyone thinks adding a V6 as oposed to a I-4 will kill your handling, it is not ultimately the weight you're adding, it is where you are adding that weight. If you have ever noticed, that BMW and most German cars like Audi have a tendancy of placing the front wheels very close to the front, look at a 3 series from the side, you'll notice from the tip of the nose to where the wheel well starts, the distance is very small.
When you swap in an RB you are extending the weight past the front wheels, this is very bad for handling, if you read last months issue of I think motor trend, they talked of the Viper vs Cadillac vs Audi, the Audi was a V8TT, and was also AWD, and for this, it always lead the first two laps, but the AWD system forced the engine to sit ahead of the front wheels, and as for this mistake, the other cars caught up and always beat them. If you notice also the new 350Z used this design, and also the Benz XLR.
If you add a V6 it is shorter than a I-6 and also an I-4, trust me when I say the power advantage is greater, and the handling compromise is so small. A 240 with a VG30TT will out handle a 240 with an RB, and will smoke an SR20, the extra power and torque will make up for the small infraction on the handling. The Cadillac CTS with the V8 went throught the trouble of cutting the firewall to push the motor 4 inches back, and this small distance caused them to beat the Viper and corvett (also the Viper had an added weight of like 150lbs, this is the penalty you get when you win, which I find stupid, everytime you win, they add anywhere from 50-75lbs). But never the less, if you swap a VG, you will probably kill anything on the road, cuz the 240 body is lighter, and the extra 40-80lbs of weight gets you about 50-70hp depending on whether you go with the TT or NA. and since it is shorter than the RB, and a local engine, you are better off in my judgement.
But logic put aside, I still like the way the RB looks in a 240 better than a VG30, but hey, it all depends on what you are building the car for.

Most ppl think since the VG is wide, you can't get a turbo in, but I think is it do-able, I mean, the engine bay of a 240 is longer than that of a Z32, the VG is a V6, this leaves you with room at the bottom of the V which I think is a plus, cuv, if you do the piping well, no one will see the turbos nicely tucked at the bottom. Hey and don't forget, the V is already as long as the Ka or maybe shorter, so you have room in the front to mount a very huge intercooler and radiator, and some other unesesary shit. with my SHO block sitting in the 240 I have like a whole foot of space. but you got to switch to electric fans or you'll sacrifice that valuable space.

The guy was doing it for himself, I think at home, and I didn't read of him owning a shop so as to offer kits, any way, you can go to drag shops and they will make you custom mounts, but you will have to have the eninge and tranny so as to make it easier.
I realy don't know on the cost, I really haven't finished my swap, money was hard to come by when I lost my job, anyway, by going with a ford V6 from my 90' Taurus SHO, it saved me on buying a front clip since I already had the whole car, and also had an extra motor. But this also created some problems, since the SHO is FWD, needed to make it RWD, except the tried and proven tranny everyone uses isn't the tranny I want, and the one I want is $$$$$, also I think Ford gets kicks from trying to see how much wiring they can shove into a car, cuz for a 1990 car with only 8 fuses, that harness was a bitch to install.
Anyway, if you either have the money, the knowledge or both, it will be the same as swapping an RB except, their are no mount kits to buy, and not the advantage of many people who have done it before you, but you have the advantage of having things local so in the long run it will be cheaper. I'm not going to say do it just to be in the same boat as I am in, but like I said, I like being unique, and also like the convinience of being a couple of back routs away in the local J-yard.
Some guy offered $1300 to swap everything in for me since I had most parts, but I wanted to do shit my self, I already need tons of cash for that tranny.
Anyway, If you want to dominate on the the strip and track, I think V-block is the way to go, you will be up to par with the 350Z, well close, since they got some new tech on them, but you should hang them with their pantys if you go TT. But it is all on what you are building the car for.

OK CKAMC, I don't get you, hide the intercooler, real easy, put a mesh grill and he will not see it, the radiator sits behind the IC, so that it is settled, but if you are hiding the radiator, that means he is already looking inside your engine bay, hide the radiato and IC all you want, but the sight of a VG30 will tell him you mean buisness, much for you sleeper loo. Hide the IC with a grill is feasable, but after that, you are cheating your self.
I would think twice with my 240SHO, if I'm racing a 240ZX, unless I am positive he doesn't have a TT, well unless the race is just for props, then I'll race anything.

You can upgrade the turbos and stay legal, the engine comes with 300hp stock and it's not the amount of horsepower that makes a car illegal, it's how you get that power. You have no idea what you're talking about.

Horsepower and speed have nothing to do with the legality of a car. Emissions, drivability(it matters to some people), noise pollution, and a few others do matter. Stop and think, "If how fast a vehicle is determines whether or not it is legal, then why is a Hayabusa legal?" Upgrading a turbo(s) or installing a different turbo(s) is perfectly legal.

In Ga it is only in the metro county, so if your car is registered to the outer counties, you don't need emissions, that is why I said, screw it, I'll register my car at my friends ADD and that way, I never have to worry about emissions. Thats what I meant.
