EGR valve problems

Does anyone know what kind of damages could be caused by rigging the EGR valve. Carbon build up in the vortec v6 is awful and causes the carbon to get stuck in the EGR valve. We have finally found a fix but dont fully understand the purpose of the EGR valve. We left the orginal EGR valve mounted on the engine. But unplugged it. We could have made a plate but after 4 years of the same problem we already had 3 EGR valves anyway (almost $300 each). We then mounted the spare EGR valve in the engine compartment so that it suchs clean air always . No chance for carbon to clog it up. The truck in running better than ever but our concerns are what kind of damage could this cause. Would the truck run too lean? If not this is a good fix for us but may not work for every one because of pollution laws

First of all, plug the EGR valve in.

Second, you don't have to replace the EGR valve each time.

Remove it, push the pintle back and allow the carbon piece to drop out, spray liberally with carb or throttle body cleaner, let dry for a minute and reinstall.

Reset the computer by pulling the negative battery cable for 10 minutes and reattch and you are as good as new.

the egr is an emissions devise that lowers the nox gases that combustion produces. nox gasses are produced when the combustion chamber temperature is too hot. the egr system recirculates exhaust back into the combustion chamber to cool the cylinders off. disabling the egr system can cause knocking and pinging. enough knocking and pinging can cause fatal damage not to mention if you have emission inspections you wont pass if it is disconnected.

Take it off and remove the chunks yourself, spay it with carb cleaner and brush it with a toothbrush, rinse with cleaner again and reinstall.

It will be like new.

I have read that you can restrict the egr valve and I have done it also.They sold their piece for $35.00.I made my own.I took a piece of sheet metal cut it to shape and drilled a 3/16 hole in the inlet side and drilled a hole on the outlet side to match the existing hole.If the ses light comes on disconnect the bat then reconnect and your good to go.

Does nothing except force you to run high octane gas to cool the combustion temperatures that cause ping and knock.

First of all I figured out long ago that cleaning the EGR valve out got you back on the road or I would not have kept the truck. But this is not a fix. The carbon will build back up and we will be in the same problem again. There has to be a fix for this!

Movin2Stereo what exactly are you talking about and who is selling the part to restrict the EGR.

If you keep a properly tuned vehicle, you won't have the carbon problem.

The EGR Mod is crap.

Your engine compensates for it by retarding the timing when the engine pings.

Reatrding the timing hurts fuel economy.
