Question about Jetta reliability/problems

I am considering a Jetta III for my next vehicle, mostly because I want something a little different than everyone else (LOTS of Hondas around here), I need a car that is pretty good on gas, and I really like the looks of the Jetta. However, i've heard and read on here that many have had problems with the car, and also some complaints about the Jetta's reliability. What i'd like to know, is the Jetta actually that much less reliable than other brands/models, even with proper maintenance, or have the problems been overblown? Are any years worse than others?

I really don't want to have to go to Plan B (Civic), but if the Jetta is actually as problematic as it seems, I guess i'll have to. :(

The Jetta is less reliable and requires more maintenance. But it sure is fun to drive.

I just bought a 99 Jetta III on Saturday so I dont have any first hand knowledge. From my research it sounds like the Jetta motors are great and totally reliable........the same can be said for the manual transmissions. Jettas appear to have lots of electrical problems. Things like bad window motors, speedometer issues, turn signals, etc.....

I bought my Jetta in 89, around the same time my brother bought his civic. I am stil on the Jetta. He is on his third Honda. He just bought his Van in for 48,000 km service. Changed oil and tranny fluid, and "Checked" things. Cost $485. I just did a partial rebuild of my engine (piston rings, rod bearings, oil pump, timing belt, plus the usual requirements for gaskets, fluids and filters). Cost $375. I win.
