gas smell

i just had a rear main seal replacement done in my 4 cyl 2.2 L 94 camry. i drove it for about thirty minutes took it to work and and came back to my car about 2 hours later to get something from i had forgotten. i opened the drivers side door and there was a strong smell of gas. after lifting the hood it wasnt as strong as it was by just stepping next to it. i can not tell where in the engine it is coming from or where it is leaking. im not sure if it is a fuel injector but if it is , does that have anything to do with the mechanic possibly messing something up after pulling up the engine? (he didnt pull the tranny because i have fwd drive and it would have been easier) im surely takin it back tomorrow but any forethoughts would help as well.

Check the fuel lines for tightness.

im kinda new to learnin about the mechanics of cars....where would i find the fuel lines?

Actually i noticed the longer it sits outside without being on the stronger the smell, and its veyr strong at the very top part of the hood on the drivers side

Get it towed to a mechanic and have him check it out. Might be something simple and cheap - don't make expensive by driving it any more and possibly causing a fire.

i had a mechanic look at it today, spend couple hours in the garage, said he and another mechanic couldnt find a damn thing wrong with it. he said he checked everything thoroughly. said the gas smel may have something to do with putting too much gas in my tank every time which allows the vapors to vent off. i hope this to be true.

the gas smell might be caused by a leaking ventilator return fuel line or maybe one of the fuel line itself. I have the very same problem this week and the dealer wants to bring the whole tank down, replace the fuel lines, etc, etc. all which would cost me over $1000 dollars. This is some BS. All it took me was $20 dollars for 4 pairs of gear clamps and a foot of fuel line hose from NAPA. The fuel lines are located underneath the car just below the driver-back passenger side door just before the left hand driver-side tire.

The fuel line end was rusty and it is leaking gas ever so lightly but just the same replace it.
