Sleeper: a car that surprises you on how fast it is; a car that a traffic light you try to take but knocks the snot off you in terms of you lose and you had no idea how you lost to it
Personally...I like a debadged M5. Get some 525i emblems, some 525i wheels and front fascia, and get one exhaust going on. Then when someone tries to race you...they'll feel that 400HP/369 lbs. of torque kick them down. Hehehe.
I am sure there are better ones and probably more fun ones...but I personally like this for its nasty quality while maintaing some luxury.

I would have to say, not really. People think the SHO is fast but the big SHO aint' that big at all.
I feel my car makes a great sleeper. A lot of people here rip on it because it is a LeBaron. I think it looks good and a lot of people wonder why the hell they just got beat by a LeBaron.

1. NISSANSPDR.
My car will run about mid to high 13's in the quarter mile. She will go 0-60 in the low to mid 6's and she tops out at about 146MPH. It is completely stock except for a K&N filtercharger, boche platinum spark plugs, and some cosmestic and interior changes. The Baron has about 185HP and 210 foot pounds of torque.
What have I dudsted? Anything from your usual rice on up to mustangs, some F-bodies, there are just too many cars to list, Civics, Ludes, RSX. Maybe I can make a log of all the cars I fry in the LeBaron sometime.
2. mastachi.
Why thank you. That is exactly what my car looks like except for the wheels. You should see all the smack that people talk around here about my car because it is a LeBaron. And also, I only got one turbo, one BIG stage 2 turbo. :D

well in my opinion i think a stock 2k2 maxima is a great sleeper. think about it, a big family sedan what does 14's. thats some pretty impressive numbers. (well to me atleast):smoka:

my impreza wagons a good sleeper. 4 cyl station wagon, low 15s maybe high 14s stock. people think cuz its not a wrx its just another economy car... HAH!
but i will have to vote for polygons lebaron. if somebody revved up at me id laugh at them, then if it was him hed smoke my ass...
no wait, im changing my vote, has anyone seen those old school dodge caravans that are awd turbo and people put t88 conversions and nitrous and manual transmission swaps and everything on them but they look COMPLETELY stock, most of them even have the stock wheels and fake wood trim. i got a video of one running a 10...
and i dont think a new maxima will run a 14 stock??? i raced one? it was close but no he was behind me?

if you go to the maxima forums here. you see people postin up time slips for their 2k2 max's in the low to mid 14's. the older vq30de have a hard time gettin down to 14's even with mods. but the 2k2's can hit 14's stock. sportscompact car also verified this by makin it hit 15 flat. but you know how well car magazine's launch cars. soooo i can safely say 14's also.

What about this GMC Python or whatever it's called? You know this pick up truck... Because everyone now knows the Ford SVT whatever pick up so it doesn't count... Also if you have ever heard of Alpina B8 4.6 , it suprises pepole expecting 320 or 328... Also my friend has a RS4 avant and besides the wheels he made it look like a 2.4 (he even put a 2.4 badge on it)... And you know anyone could change wheels an exhaust on a 2.4 so he suprises many pepole at the light... Pepole also like to get smoked by my S8 because it's also debaged... i thought of putting a 2.8 badge on it but i don't know if this wouldn't be too much... There are also old rwd turbo volvos kicking some major ass , with turbo conversions with lots of hp or ones with swapped V8 f.e from mustangs...

actually, i find that most people think ALL new imprezas are wrx's, hood scoop or not. mine has 2.5ts emblems and no scoop and i STILL get "hey nice wrx" every week or so, this coming from the so-called racers that say they know everything about imports. the funniest thing though was when the owner of one of the local import shops was looking at my car and said "too bad they dont make a wrx wagon" i was thinking the owner of an import shop said this??? needless to say i dont trust them with any of my tuning needs. :D

LOL, my dad used to have one of those mini-vans. He wouldn't have bought it otherwise. Those vans are some damn good sleepers. Also those new Maximas are a lot quicker than you would expect them to be. They aren't a bad sleeper at all.

I guess the GN could be called a sleeper. I feel sorry for the fool that races it thinking Buick and have a laugh about it. Those are nice, I'd live to add one to my collection.
After thinking about it though I did once see a Dodge Challenger with 340 badges on it but it had a 528 Hemi in it. But then again it is kinda hard to hide a Hemi.

weapon r intake, universal muffler, and thats about it. as for why its faster than all the published times, u got me? im thinking the "testers" or whoever they use to get those times didnt have enough practice with proper launch technique, its tricky to do without bogging the engine, even dropping the clutch at redline bogs it down. ive had a LOT of practice dragging mine, so i guess thats why? id like to get a wrx on a track and see if i could make it go faster than published times, if i could then we know for sure that its lack of practice on the testers part.

oh and i got another sleeper. the opel lotus omega. looks like any other 4 door sedan, but under the hood lurks a twin turbo inline 6 producing 377 hp and 419 ft lbs stock. coupled to a 6 speed manual in a relatively light (3600 lb) body, and u got a nice sleeper  *sigh* if only they sold em here, i might have gotten one of those instead.

1991-1993 Nissan Sentra SE-R. A sleeper anyway, but doubly so with an SR20DET (JDM turbo) in it.
Somewhere out there, there's one mystified 996 owner, wondering why the heck a nerdy-looking Sentra stayed glued to his bumper, no matter how hard he pushed the gas :D

if were talking modified cars...small economy cars with big engines put in them. For example, jay leno apparently has a ford festiva with a straight 6 and Nitrious! that would definately piss the snot out of anyone who just spend their years earnings on a sweet sports car:D

As for the E39 ///M5 , you'll look kinda strange with 4 tail pipes and a 520i badge... But i know a guy that has an Alpina B10 Bi-turbo with 518 badge... And for those who don't know alpina B10 bi-turbo is a E34 that kills ferraris , porsches etc. with a BiTurbo engine which stock makes 360 hp and i've heard of 650 hp+ ones...
Also how about brabus E-class with this 7.3 582 hp V12?
You won't expect a wagon to do 320 kmh or a sedan to do 330 kmh
And that's actually because they don't make tyres for such heavy cars to do more... Also how about those GMC Python or how they are called that make 0-60 in 4 sec or so , because the F-150 lightning does give the game away at the first sight...:( ...

Debadging is sort of cheating. Sort of. I mean you could do that to all sorts of cars then. I suppose it would be the antithesis of all the ricers out there who "upgrade" their cars with better badges (i.e. SiR Preludes). :D
Well, even WITH leaving the badges on these following cars, I bet they would fool quite a handful of folk (I think too many people now know what the WRX is to be fooled):
1) Audi S8: not many on the road (or even A8s for that matter) highly sedated appearance, super-lux engine combined with stability of all-wheel-drive equals great harnessable power on the street, which is something uncommon for most heavy full sized sedans.
2) Beetle Turbo S: also not many on the road, may be easily confused with regular beetles, or even standard turbos for that matter.
3) Skyline GT-R! Well, in the U.S. at least. Of course, this would really apply only when the GT-R is accosted by Detroit iron.

Audi S8 - i have one , and mostly riced-out compact drivers don't know what this is... It's also debadged , i thought of putting a 2.8 badge , but this will be too much , and i also have the chrome side mirrors like all S8 , so if someone knows a bit about it will know...

that's a funny name for a big old volvo , but it has 320 hp and looks like grandpas car...

Yeah, I know what you mean. That's why I pretty much limited the analysis only to the foolhardy ones like the single-minded muscle car lovers out there. You say that people would be asking about it (GT-R) all the time, but they would probably ask what it is more than anything. True, enthusiasts know, but not everyone is one. I work near the Hancock park area and one day on that street there was a 996 Turbo parked near an R34 GT-R. No one really passed much more than a glance at the Nissan, but just about everyone gave a full 90 degree headturn for the Porsche. Those who know, know. But still not too many know. Furthermore, the Skyline's body paneling doesn't look super-exotic or anything. It doesn't have a real sports car shape to it, and that helps it in being misleading. Which is all for the better. Even if one never heard of a Diablo, one look at it would definately insinuate that this car can fly with the bats of hell.
The GT-R would have been an even better sleeper 3 years ago, when VERY little of the American public was aware of its existance. With all the major publications mentioning the name "Skyline" over and over again these days (especially with the coming of the G35, and possible GT-R), people are now in the know.

25 years ago I knew a surveyor with a humble looking early '70s Valiant Ute (Mopar) he used for work, complete with sunvisor, three on the tree gears, builders racks, mudflaps - the whole bit.
Not so good for the autobahn, no handling or brakes, looked about as sporty as a school bus ..

... but his had the very rare triple weber Hemi 6 option and could do genuine 14's (not bad for them days)

I pulled up to a red light the other night and some fool in a 4.6 stang
started revving up i just smiled...I have no outside mods besides
some eagle alloys ,he just felt like picking on the apparently slow as
s*%t....to his suprise LOL !!!!
by the way it is a gmc typhoon (truck) and cyclone (suv)
that had supercharged 4.3 liter v-6 and all wheel drive that
would leave sports car owners scratching their heads and saying...
...WTF

exhaust-driven supercharger you mean (turbo) for the Cyclone/Typhoon twins .. but yeah, they were really something - faster to 100mph that a Ferrari according to C&D mag - and a tribute to the lateral thinking that GM is capable of

a gmc syclone had a better 1/4 mile time than the porsche 911 turbo of the same era. of course those of us "in the know" would know better than to pick on one, BUT remove the bodykit and emblems and its just another lowered s-10, thatd be a good sleeper.

Seriously, why don't they bring back the Typhoon/Cyclone or something like it? Sport trucks are in, anyways.

You want the ultimate sleeper? Try the Mosler Twinstar. Basically, Mosler takes an El Dorado and drop another (totally stock) Northstar V8 in the back. 600 hp at all four corners, 0-60 in 4.5, 1/4 mile in 12.5. From a vehicle that looks bone stock. The best thing about this car is it can do the coolest burnouts EVER by throwing the front tranny into reverse and the rear into drive. To see the result, check out the March issue of Sport Compact Car, where a twin-engined Tiburon did this. I can only imagine the looks on people's faces...

I saw that issue and the tire tracks left by that Tiburon. All I could say was, . I say again, .
But it did have a hell of a reliability issue. Is the Mosler sold in that form? If not, then it would be just another tuned sleeper which really isn't fair...

That Mosler Twin Star sure is some device .. but with it's extended wheelbase hardly looks "bone stock".
Without knowing too much about Warren Mosler, his auto-creations seem admirable, worthy of interest, respect.
The review I read remarked on the jaw-dropping effect to onlookers when, after the 1st throaty-sounding engine was fired, the second donk was started ..
The initial quoted price for conversion I thought fairly realistic , eg cheaper than euro-exotica

The 2001 Twinstar was 84,9. Consider that this is the price of the El Dorado AND the conversion. Same price as a Porsche, similar ride quality, better performance.
I guess it's less stock than I thought. There's also some vents or intakes on the sides I didn't notice before. But the engines are absolutely stock. In fact, Mosler claims you can take the car in for its 100k mile scheduled tune-ups! Pretty sweet, but I'd end up modding the engines. I'm never satisfied with anything, I suppose. :smoker2:
And no, the Tiburon's reliability problems were of a totally different nature. The twin-engined Tiburon ran on methanol. I'm not sure why. Had he been running high boost, a little methanol/water injection to spike the octane and cool the cylinders would've made plenty of sense. But ditching gas for a more expensive and less reliable fuel? I guess he just wanted to be different, and I can't say I don't fantasize about twincharing my car someday...

Thanks for the info Holyterror, and isn't it wonderfully absurd to read your quote:
"but I'd end up modding the engines" (ie plural!) :evillaugh
Pity I can't post a foto but anyone remember that spectacular 'Hurst Hairy Olds' twin-engined 4wd dragcar from the mid '60's, with Toronado power front & rear?

I recently bought a 98 Buick GS w/ the supercharged engine. I"m not sure if it's a potential sleeper or not. But someone on another message board said it ran low 15's and I think 6.5 or 6.6 0-60.
I guess that's pretty good for Grandpa's Buick. ;)
I mostly bought the car for the ride and creature comforts. It just so happened to have a supercharged engine. I think my husband is really enjoying it though, it's bringing back his hay days with his 68 chevelle. Though it's obviously not as fast as the chevelle.
I'll let you guys know if we're able to dupe any people, who think it's a boat on wheels.:sun:

i dont think modded or debadged cars can really be classed as sleepers.
as for the best ones, any of you know the Volvo 850R estate?1st its a volvo, 2nd its an estate, 3rd its shit hot fast.
another one could be the lotus carlton. like the opel lotus omega one of you mentioned, but faster, older, and just looks like an old saloon car with sum boy racer alloys.

I say Datsun 510 would win this one. Drop in a vg30, keep all the emblems on it just for giggles, and no one would assume anything besides clown car.

Long live the Chevelle.
Have fun sleeping people; there's nothing like the expression on their faces when it hits them. Something like this --> hehe

Try a G20 with a SR20DET modded to about 400whp. That would be a nice sleeper cause it looks like a family car that doesn't have any special attributes.
