engine swap for eclipse ?

I've noticed that many eclipes break down, is it cause of the engine or the transmission? I heard it was both. Anyways i saw this incredible deal of a 97 eclipse rs fwd on sale for $3,800 and i really want to buy it but knowing that I'll have problems with the engine sometime in the future i want to ready myself with an engine swap.
I got hook ups on the engine but i only plan to spend 3,000 (labor) on the swap. so i want an engine without major modification but i want it over the 200hp range. the prelude h22 ? the supra 2jz ? or even the evo engine .. can i have more information on which one of these would be a good swap for a low price?

the 4g63 is the evo engien. i guess you could drop a h22 or 2jz, but their is no way to keep the cost of fabrication under 3000, unless your a guru. buy the eclipse rs if you like it, and drop in a 6 bolt 1g 4g63 and go from there. good for upto 400 hp on stock interals.

i heard somewhere in this forum you could get 500 hp out of the stock internals on the 4g63

well if you have 3,800 for the car and 3,000 more. thats 6,800, you can buy a decent gst or gsx that already come with the 4g63 and boosted. better deal. probably less than that. i seen some for 5,000. good luck.

But he is saying he wants a new engine so it wont break down. So if you bought the gsx it would still be used and mid~high mileage.

u cant just drop any engine you want into a car. you cant even drop the 4g63 into the rs without going through all kinds of shit. check out the thread on top of this page for the details

you can find a cheap 95 turbo talon or eclipse and have enough money for a 1g4g63. its up to you. or you can always get the turbo 1g model.

there is only one person i know of who's ever put a 4g63 in the 2nd generation rs or gs. i don't know his name or where's currently located, but i do remember him saying he spent over $5000 on the entire deal and that he'd had a shop do all the work and in teh end he had a car that was no faster than a 95-99 gst which can be bought for $6000-7000 in good shape. hell you could get a $6000 95 gst, swap in the 6 bolt for another $1000 yourself, add dsmlink for another $800 and never have to touch the motor or your tuning apparatus ever again.

You are on the wrong path. Do not buy a RS/GS/ESi if you want a turbo car. Save your money for a GST/GSX/TSI or don't even try.
You cannot pioneer an engine swap on a budget. Don't waste your time looking into it, it will cost $8,000 to put a supra motor in your car.

I dont know that much about Mitsubishis or Eclipses, but wont a 6cyl from a mitsu FTO fit right in? They have the same chassis.

im not looking for turbo .. im looking for something reliable that will last another 100,000 miles and still be pretty strong .. 200 hp is desired .. as for the 8 grand .. is that grand for the motor and the labor ? cause im just asking if itll be under 2 - 4 grand for the labor costs .. i can get the engine for cheap
ey thanks for all your help though ... cause of all your replies im thinking of just buying a supra but id like a tad bit more input on this =]

You won't hit 200hp at the wheels on a non-turbo car without spending more than it would cost to get the gst.
I made 8k up. A 4g63 swap has apparently costed 5-6k, and a supra would be harder. Don't do it. Better yet, do it, then tell me how much it cost.

they're not teh same chassis, just similar in size on the outside. they have almost nothing at all in common partwise between them other than the mitsubishi emblem.

Well I kno I'm kind of a newbie here but, from do a lil reasearch this is whut i heard. If you can get ahold of an evo 8 engine (inline 4g63) i hear that can be swapped pretty nicely. Since the 4g63 from the 1st and 2nd gen eclipse bolt up on the passenger side thats whut makes the cost so high. But the evo 8 engine bolts up on the driver's side aka same as a rs/gs eclipse. Hope that helped a lil.

well the simple fact that the engine bolts up on the same side is of little help at all since you'd have to custom fabricate engine mounts regardless of what engine you used. you still don't have a transmission that will bolt up to it and be fwd unless you specially modify the awd tranny to run just the front diff (can be done).
in all honesty folks, the best bet is to simply turbo the 420a with a turbo kit from hahn racecraft or star turbo systems. for half the cash you'd be farther ahead than a motor swap. for the same money as what the swap would cost you could replace rods and pistons as well as throwing in a hot set of cams as well.
no offense but i've been working on these cars for the last 7 years including swapping a 4g63 into my 92 esi. it can be done on a first generation, but even then its not that good of a deal as compared to just buying a factory turbo car.
